Steve

Steve is prejudiced, abrasive and abusive toward Vash and Knives. Their ability to perform tasks far beyond normal human capacity frightens him, and he responds by calling them monsters and subjecting them to verbal and physical abuse.

He is also a heavy drinker and behaves inappropriately toward Mary, including touching her without consent. These actions make him disliked and contribute to Rowan's jealousy.

His genuine misconduct nevertheless becomes important when more serious accusations are made against him, because the other crew members already have ample reason to distrust his character.

Steve is an ordinary human without supernatural abilities. As one of the active Project SEEDS crew, he has the professional competence required to work aboard a technologically advanced interstellar colony vessel.

No particular technical specialty, exceptional fighting ability or signature weapon is established for him in the anime.

Steve appears in the flashbacks of "Rem Saverem." His mistreatment of Vash and Knives exposes both boys to human prejudice within the environment where Rem Saverem has tried to raise them with compassion.

His inappropriate behavior toward Mary also contributes to tensions involving Rowan. Knives secretly exploits those tensions by helping engineer a situation in which Mary and Rowan falsely accuse Steve of sexually assaulting Mary while intoxicated. Steve is placed in cold sleep without being able to defend himself.

Rowan subsequently sabotages Steve's cryogenic unit, causing his death. The episode makes the distinction between Steve's genuine abusive behavior and the more serious fabricated accusation important to the tragedy.

Vash the Stampede is subjected to Steve's fear, prejudice and physical abuse aboard Project SEEDS.

Millions Knives receives similar abuse, reinforcing his developing belief that humans will fear and persecute beings different from themselves.

Mary is Steve's fellow crew member. He repeatedly makes unwanted advances toward her. Mary later participates in a false accusation against him.

Rowan resents Steve's behavior toward Mary. Rowan eventually sabotages Steve's cold-sleep unit, killing him.

Rem Saverem opposes Steve's dehumanizing treatment of Vash and Knives.

Joey is another active Project SEEDS crew member serving alongside Steve.
