Rem Saverem

Rem is compassionate, optimistic and deeply committed to the value of human life. She refuses to judge Vash and Knives as monsters because they are different from humans and instead raises them with affection, patience and moral guidance.

Her optimism is not presented as ignorance of suffering. Rem has experienced personal grief before joining Project SEEDS and understands that despair can distort a person's choices. She nevertheless believes that people can correct mistakes and choose a better direction.

This outlook becomes inseparable from Vash's own morality. His refusal to kill is rooted in lessons Rem taught him, even when maintaining those principles causes him tremendous suffering.

Rem is an ordinary human without the superhuman abilities of Vash and Knives. Her expertise is connected to her work aboard the technologically advanced Project SEEDS fleet.

She is capable of operating the fleet's systems and responding during emergencies. More importantly to the story, she possesses the emotional strength to oppose other adults when she believes Vash and Knives are being treated unjustly.

Her influence is ideological rather than combative. The principles she teaches Vash continue shaping his decisions more than a century after their childhood together.

Rem appears principally through Vash's memories of Project SEEDS. She cares for the young Vash and Knives aboard the fleet and tries to teach them that life has inherent value.

In the 1998 continuity, Rem speaks to Vash about Alex, someone she loved whose support helped her confront her own mistakes. His loss contributed to her decision to look toward the future and join Project SEEDS.

When Knives sabotages the fleet and sends the colony ships toward destruction, Rem places Vash and Knives in an escape pod but remains aboard. She manages to save many of the ships by correcting their trajectories, sacrificing her own chance to escape.

Vash the Stampede is one of the two Independent Plants Rem raises. Her teachings about the sanctity of life become the foundation of his pacifism.

Millions Knives is raised alongside Vash under Rem's care. She treats him with the same compassion she gives his brother, even as his view of humanity develops in a radically different direction.

Alex was someone Rem loved before the main Project SEEDS events. His death affected her deeply, and the process of recovering from that grief helped shape her determination to move forward.

William Conrad is a fellow Project SEEDS scientist in the manga and Stampede continuities, although the exact composition of the SEEDS crew differs between adaptations.
