Joey

Joey is practical, thoughtful and inclined toward decisive action when lives are threatened. He believes difficult circumstances can require sacrificing the smallest possible number of people to prevent a greater loss.

At the same time, he is capable of questioning his own decisions. He recognizes that Rem is better at teaching Vash and Knives about kindness and the future, while his own strengths lie in technology and history.

That self-doubt becomes important when a crisis forces Joey to make an irreversible decision. Rather than treating the outcome casually, he questions whether acting quickly necessarily meant acting correctly.

Joey is an ordinary human but possesses substantial technical knowledge appropriate to a Project SEEDS crew member. He teaches Vash and Knives about technology, Earth's history and the colony fleet's purpose.

He is also familiar with the SEEDS ship's systems and emergency procedures. His capabilities are technical and practical rather than supernatural or combat-oriented.

Joey appears in the 1998 anime's extended flashback to life aboard Project SEEDS. Alongside Rem and the other waking crew, he helps educate and care for Vash and Knives during their childhood.

Tension aboard the ship grows through conflicts involving Steve, Mary and Rowan. Joey's belief in decisive action becomes especially important when the interpersonal crisis turns violent.

When Rowan threatens Rem with a gun, Joey ejects Rowan through an airlock to stop him. He immediately questions whether he acted too quickly and whether another solution might have existed.

Rem Saverem is Joey's fellow Project SEEDS crew member. He respects her ability to teach Vash and Knives compassion and hope.

Vash the Stampede is one of the children Joey helps educate aboard the ship, particularly in history and technology.

Millions Knives receives the same education from Joey alongside Vash.

Rowan is another crew member. Joey ejects Rowan through an airlock when Rowan threatens Rem, then questions whether his lethal decision was justified.

Mary and Steve are fellow members of the Project SEEDS crew involved in the tensions surrounding Rowan.
