Shiggy is inquisitive, composed and helpful. He has a strong interest in maps and information about the Abyss and generally approaches problems more analytically than Riko or Nat.
Although skeptical about dangerous plans, Shiggy is willing to help once a decision has been made. He explains the dangers of each layer to Riko rather than simply telling her not to go.
His calmness also makes him useful when the children need to keep secrets from the adults at the orphanage.

Shiggy holds Red Whistle rank and has completed the initial stage of cave-raider training. He possesses the theoretical and practical knowledge expected of a young delver but is not yet authorized to explore the deeper layers.
His strongest demonstrated skill is knowledge. Shiggy understands maps, layer depths, the Curse and cave-raiding regulations well enough to explain the practical consequences of Riko's planned descent.
He has no established supernatural ability or signature Artifact.

Shiggy helps Riko investigate Reg after the robot is brought secretly into the orphanage. He participates in attempts to understand Reg's unusual body and helps create a plausible identity that will allow him to remain among the children.
When Riko decides to search for Lyza, Shiggy explains the depth and dangers of the Abyss layer by layer. He nevertheless helps Riko and Reg prepare their departure and meets them before their descent.
Later surface-side chapters show Shiggy continuing to investigate unusual events in Orth with Nat, including information surrounding the Birthday-Death Disease and the Abyss's recurring mysteries.
