Kiwi

Kiyui is friendly, innocent and good-natured. He speaks less confidently than the older children and is generally cared for rather than expected to take responsibility during their plans.

His youth makes him curious about what the others are doing, and he readily becomes attached to people who spend time with him.

Kiyui's interactions with the older orphans show the more ordinary family life that exists at the Belchero Orphanage beneath its strict cave-raider training.

Kiyui is a Bell, the preliminary rank given to children who have not yet completed their first descent and earned a Red Whistle.

He has received theoretical education about the Abyss but lacks the practical experience of Riko, Nat and Shiggy. No supernatural abilities, combat skills or personal Artifacts have been established for him.

Kiyui appears during Riko's life at the orphanage and becomes acquainted with Reg while the robot is secretly integrated into the group.

After Riko and Reg leave Orth, Kiyui becomes seriously ill shortly before his birthday. His symptoms resemble the mysterious Birthday-Death Disease associated with children in Orth.

Jiruo takes Kiyui aboard a caravan ship away from the island, where his condition unexpectedly improves. The recovery becomes important evidence that the illness may depend upon proximity to the Abyss rather than being an ordinary infectious disease.

Riko is one of the older orphans with whom Kiyui grows up.

Nat and Shiggy share the orphanage with Kiyui and help look after him.

Reg develops a bond with Kiyui during his brief time at the orphanage and visits him before departing with Riko.

Jiruo is Kiyui's instructor and takes him away from Orth in an attempt to save him from his unexplained illness.

Mio examines Kiyui during his illness and witnesses his unexpected improvement after he leaves the island.

Belchero directs the orphanage where Kiyui lives and trains.
