Satou

Satou is irresponsible and lacks the discipline Kaoru expects from someone trained in her family's swordsmanship. Drinking and engaging in an unnecessary armed fight demonstrates that he has failed to internalize the principle that a sword should protect rather than harm.

He is also dependent on his former teacher when his own actions produce consequences he cannot handle. Instead of resolving the conflict himself, he returns to the Kamiya Dojo with Hira and places Kaoru in danger.

His eventual shame distinguishes him from antagonists who openly celebrate violence. The incident is presented as a serious failure of character and training rather than a lifelong commitment to criminality.

Satou has received instruction in Kamiya Kasshin-ryu and therefore has basic swordsmanship training. No named technique, exceptional physical attribute or notable victory is established for him.

His combat experience is sufficient for him and Hira to injure members of the Hishimanji Guren Gang during their drunken altercation. The story nevertheless treats their use of swords in that situation as a disgrace rather than an accomplishment.

Satou and Hira return to the Kamiya Dojo after their fight with the Hishimanji Guren Gang. Their pursuers soon arrive, forcing Kaoru to confront the consequences of what her former pupils have done.

Hachisuka leads the gang and threatens the dojo. Yahiko attempts to defend Kaoru, while Kenshin returns in time to prevent the confrontation from escalating.

After Kenshin neutralizes the gang's wooden cannon and drives them away, he addresses Satou and Hira directly. He tells them to forget that they were ever students of Kamiya Kasshin-ryu and to never take up swords again, making their expulsion from the school's legacy explicit.

Hira is Satou's fellow former student and companion in the drunken fight that causes the conflict.

Kaoru Kamiya is Satou's former instructor. His conduct deeply disappoints her because it contradicts the philosophy she tries to teach.

Hachisuka leads the gang seeking retaliation against Satou and Hira.

Kenshin Himura protects the dojo from the consequences of Satou's actions and orders him to abandon the sword.

Yahiko Myojin witnesses Satou's failure while beginning his own path as a Kamiya Kasshin-ryu student.
