Yahiko Myojin

Yahiko is proud, argumentative, stubborn, and desperate to be treated as an adult. His samurai heritage matters enormously to him, and he initially reacts aggressively to anyone he thinks is looking down on him. Much of this pride masks insecurity created by poverty, orphanhood, and forced criminal work.

He possesses a strong sense of justice and personal honor. Once given the chance to live honestly, Yahiko embraces training with extraordinary seriousness despite complaining constantly about Kaoru's instruction. He becomes increasingly willing to confront stronger opponents when somebody else is in danger.

Yahiko's growth does not erase his temper or competitiveness. He continues arguing with Kaoru, Sanosuke, and others, but experience gradually replaces empty boasting with earned confidence.

Yahiko trains in Kamiya Kasshin-ryū, initially struggling with fundamentals because he wants advanced techniques before mastering basic movements. Kaoru forces him to develop stance, timing, endurance, and control before allowing him to treat swordsmanship as a shortcut to strength.

His most important technique is Hadome, in which the user catches an opponent's blade between crossed hands. He later learns Hawatari, following Hadome by moving along the captured weapon to counterattack. These techniques embody the school's emphasis on neutralizing lethal force without killing.

As Yahiko matures, his reflexes and battle judgment improve enough for him to defeat adult swordsmen and survive confrontations far beyond what would normally be expected of a child. Watsuki explicitly designed Yahiko around the frustration of wanting to improve at kendo while lacking effortless genius.

Yahiko begins as a pickpocket forced to steal for a yakuza gang that claims he must repay debts connected to his mother. Kenshin recognizes his pride and refuses to treat him merely as a criminal, while Kaoru eventually accepts him as a student.

His role expands during the Kanryū, Kyoto, and later conflicts. Yahiko repeatedly refuses to remain safely behind simply because he is young and gradually proves that his training has practical value.

During the Jinchū conflict, Yahiko defeats one of Enishi's Four Stars and later helps defend Kaoru's dojo while Kenshin is emotionally incapacitated. His progress becomes significant enough that Kenshin eventually entrusts him with the sakabatō for his fifteenth birthday, recognizing Yahiko as a swordsman capable of carrying its principle forward.

Kaoru Kamiya is Yahiko's teacher in Kamiya Kasshin-ryū. He constantly complains about her training but respects her deeply and adopts the school's philosophy as his own.

Kenshin Himura is Yahiko's greatest model of what a swordsman should be. Kenshin deliberately leaves his formal training to Kaoru while supporting his development from the sidelines.

Sanosuke Sagara has a rough older-brother relationship with Yahiko. The two mock each other constantly, but Sanosuke often encourages Yahiko's courage and independence.

Tsubame Sanjō becomes one of Yahiko's closest friends and eventual romantic interests after they meet through Akabeko.

Yutarō Tsukayama is Yahiko's friend and rival, another young swordsman whose determination pushes Yahiko competitively.

Shizuru Myojin is not part of Yahiko's family; his known immediate relatives are his parents, both of whom died before the series begins. His father's samurai background remains central to Yahiko's pride and identity.
