Kenshin Himura

Kenshin is gentle, courteous, humble, and deliberately nonthreatening in ordinary life. He performs household work without complaint, speaks politely even to people who insult him, and frequently defuses conflict before drawing his sword. His unusual speech patterns and mild demeanor contrast sharply with the reputation attached to Battōsai.

That gentleness is an active choice rather than his natural inability to fight. Kenshin possesses an intense protective instinct and can become frighteningly focused when innocent people are endangered. Encounters with opponents from the Bakumatsu sometimes bring his old assassin's mentality close to the surface, especially when anger threatens the vow that separates his present life from his past.

Kenshin's deepest conflict is guilt. He believes the lives he took during the revolution can never simply be balanced away, so he treats protecting others as an ongoing form of atonement rather than a debt he expects eventually to finish paying. His relationships in Tokyo gradually force him to consider whether living happily alongside others can coexist with responsibility for what he did.

Kenshin is a master of Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū, an ancient sword style designed to allow one fighter to defeat many opponents through extraordinary speed, perception, body mechanics, and powerful battōjutsu. His small frame is technically ill-suited to the style's physical demands, but his skill allows him to perform techniques capable of overpowering much larger fighters.

His primary weapon is a sakabatō, a reverse-bladed katana whose cutting edge lies on the inward side. The weapon lets Kenshin employ lethal sword techniques while reducing the likelihood of killing his targets. His signature attacks include Ryūtsuisen, a descending strike; Ryūkansen, a rotational counterattack; Sōryūsen, a two-stage battōjutsu combination; Kuzuryūsen, a simultaneous assault on nine vital directions; and Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki, the ultimate technique of Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū.

Kenshin also possesses extraordinary combat awareness. He can read stance, breathing, intent, footwork, and subtle shifts in balance quickly enough to identify techniques during battle. His speed frequently causes opponents to lose sight of him entirely, and his battōjutsu is fast enough to decide encounters in a single exchange.

Kenshin enters Tokyo after a decade of wandering and encounters Kaoru while she is searching for a murderer falsely using the Battōsai name. After exposing the impostor, he accepts Kaoru's invitation to stay at her dojo and becomes increasingly involved in the lives of Yahiko, Sanosuke, Megumi, and others drawn into their circle.

His past returns repeatedly through former enemies and survivors of the Bakumatsu. The Kyoto conflict forces him to confront Makoto Shishio, the assassin who succeeded him during the revolution, and eventually return to training under Seijūrō Hiko to complete Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū.

The later Jinchū conflict reveals that Kenshin's original childhood name was Shinta and exposes his marriage to Tomoe Yukishiro during the Bakumatsu. Her death is directly connected to the cross-shaped scar on his face and to Enishi Yukishiro's campaign of revenge against him. Kenshin's final challenge is therefore not simply defeating another enemy but accepting responsibility without allowing guilt to destroy the life he has built.

Kaoru Kamiya gives Kenshin a home at the Kamiya dojo and becomes the person most closely associated with his return to ordinary life. Their relationship develops from mutual trust into romantic love. They eventually marry and have a son, Kenji Himura.

Seijūrō Hiko is Kenshin's master in Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū. He rescued the orphaned child originally named Shinta, renamed him Kenshin, and trained him until Kenshin left against his wishes to participate in the revolution.

Yahiko Myojin looks to Kenshin as a model of the swordsman he wants to become. Kenshin refuses to teach him Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū but supports his training under Kaoru.

Sanosuke Sagara begins as Kenshin's opponent and becomes one of his closest friends. Their radically different fighting styles and personalities hide strong mutual trust.

Megumi Takani owes her freedom from Kanryū's opium operation partly to Kenshin and later becomes one of the people who regularly treats his injuries.

Hajime Saitō fought Kenshin during the Bakumatsu and remains his ideological opposite in the Meiji era. Their rivalry is built on deep knowledge of one another's strength.

Makoto Shishio succeeded Kenshin as the Ishin Shishi's shadow assassin and later becomes his principal opponent during the Kyoto crisis.

Tomoe Yukishiro is Kenshin's first wife and the woman whose death becomes the central trauma of his life as Battōsai.

Enishi Yukishiro is Tomoe's younger brother, who holds Kenshin responsible for her death and organizes the Jinchū campaign to make him suffer equivalent loss.
