Hira

Hira is irresponsible and cowardly during his principal appearance. After drinking and starting trouble with members of a violent gang, he runs back to his former teacher for protection rather than accepting responsibility himself.

His behavior particularly upsets Kaoru because it contradicts the philosophy she attaches to the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu. Carrying a sword while drunk and using it to start a pointless fight turns the school's teachings into precisely the kind of violence Kaoru opposes.

Hira does show shame once the consequences become unavoidable. Kenshin's condemnation leaves no ambiguity about how seriously he has disgraced his former training.

Hira has received training in Kamiya Kasshin-ryu and therefore possesses at least basic kenjutsu experience. The story does not establish any named techniques or exceptional combat ability for him.

His use of swordsmanship in a drunken brawl is presented as an abuse of what he learned rather than evidence of impressive skill. When the resulting gang conflict reaches the dojo, Hira is unable to resolve the danger he helped create.

Hira and Satou arrive at the Kamiya Dojo seeking Kaoru's protection after a drunken altercation with the Hishimanji Guren Gang. Their former affiliation with her school means that the consequences of their behavior fall directly on Kaoru.

Hachisuka and his gang arrive demanding retaliation. Kaoru prepares to accept responsibility as their former teacher, and Yahiko refuses to stand aside while she is threatened.

Kenshin Himura eventually intervenes and neutralizes the gang's wooden cannon by cutting its projectile apart. After the danger passes, Kenshin sternly tells Hira and Satou to forget that they were ever Kamiya Kasshin-ryu students and never wield swords again.

Kaoru Kamiya is Hira's former instructor. His misuse of swordsmanship causes her to question her ability to pass the ideals of Kamiya Kasshin-ryu on to others.

Satou is Hira's fellow former student and companion in the drunken altercation that provokes the Hishimanji Guren Gang.

Hachisuka leads the gang that pursues Hira and Satou to the Kamiya Dojo.

Kenshin Himura protects the dojo from the gang but condemns Hira's conduct and tells him to abandon the sword.

Yahiko Myojin witnesses the incident while beginning his own education in the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu.
