Roberta Cisneros

Roberta is quiet, formal and intensely loyal to the Lovelace family. She regards her service there as an opportunity to live according to values different from those that governed her earlier life, and her attachment to Garcia goes far beyond an ordinary employer-servant relationship.

Her composure changes dramatically when someone threatens the people she protects. Roberta can become frighteningly single-minded, pursuing an objective through injury, exhaustion and overwhelming opposition. Her discipline makes that determination more dangerous than ordinary rage.

She also carries profound guilt over violence committed earlier in her life. The Lovelace household offers her stability and a chance to direct her strength toward protection rather than political violence, but the past remains psychologically difficult for her to escape.

Roberta is an extraordinarily capable combatant with training in guerrilla warfare, firearms, explosives and close-quarters fighting. She was trained in Cuba and served with FARC, acquiring battlefield experience before entering the Lovelace household.

Her arsenal includes firearms concealed beneath her maid clothing, grenades and a reinforced umbrella capable of functioning as a weapon. During her first pursuit through Roanapur, she uses a large weapon concealed inside a suitcase and demonstrates exceptional accuracy and physical strength.

Roberta's endurance is equally remarkable. She continues fighting after injuries that would incapacitate most people and can contend directly with heavily armed professional criminals. Her combination of planning, weapons knowledge and relentless pursuit earns her a fearsome reputation.

Roberta enters the story after Garcia is kidnapped by criminals and transported through Roanapur as cargo aboard the Black Lagoon. She follows the trail independently, entering a city whose inhabitants initially have no idea what kind of opponent is searching for the boy.

Her pursuit brings her into direct conflict with Revy and the Lagoon Company. The escalating battle demonstrates that the apparently ordinary maid is capable of challenging Roanapur's established gunfighters while Hotel Moscow becomes involved in resolving the situation.

Roberta later returns to the center of the story after another crisis involving the Lovelace family. The assassination of Diego Lovelace sends her into a violent pursuit of the people she holds responsible, with grief, guilt and drug use steadily damaging her ability to distinguish revenge from her duty to Garcia.

Her campaign ultimately draws Garcia, Fabiola, the Lagoon Company, Hotel Moscow and American soldiers into the same conflict. Garcia eventually confronts Roberta directly in an attempt to break the cycle of violence and bring her home.

Garcia Lovelace is the person Roberta is most devoted to. She serves him as a maid but also treats Garcia Lovelace with familial affection, and protecting him becomes one of the strongest motivations in her life.

Fabiola Iglesias is another maid serving the Lovelace family. Fabiola Iglesias admires Roberta but also recognizes how destructive her later pursuit has become.

Revy becomes Roberta's principal opponent during her first visit to Roanapur. Their prolonged fight establishes mutual recognition between two exceptionally dangerous women, although neither is inclined to treat the other warmly.
