Pearl

Pearl is boastful and intensely proud of his defensive record. He repeatedly emphasizes that he has survived numerous battles without losing blood, treating personal injury less as an ordinary hazard than as an intolerable humiliation. His confidence is strongest when an opponent cannot penetrate his shields.

When frightened or wounded, Pearl instinctively creates fire around himself. The reaction originated during his jungle upbringing, when he learned to frighten wild animals away with flames whenever he felt endangered. In combat, this habit causes him to ignite his shields and the surrounding battlefield regardless of the danger posed to his own crewmates.

Pearl remains loyal to the Krieg Pirates’ ruthless hierarchy and readily attacks weakened or distracted opponents. However, his composure is considerably less stable than his “Iron Wall” reputation suggests.

Pearl wears circular metal shields over much of his body, including his chest, back, elbows, and knees. These plates provide extensive protection and can also be used as blunt weapons. He strikes opponents by slamming or crushing them between shields, allowing him to combine defense and offense without exposing himself unnecessarily.

After seeing his own blood, Pearl enters a fire-based fighting state in which he ignites his shields and spreads flames around the battlefield. His armor withstands the heat, enabling him to launch burning shield attacks and charge through fire. The technique becomes especially dangerous aboard the wooden Baratie, where uncontrolled flames threaten the entire restaurant.

Despite his durability, Pearl is not invulnerable. Sufficiently powerful strikes can crack his shields, and his fixation on avoiding injury makes him emotionally unstable once his defenses fail. Gin ultimately demonstrates that Pearl’s armor can be destroyed through concentrated force.

Pearl participates in Don Krieg’s attempt to seize the Baratie after the Krieg Pirates return from the Grand Line in a devastated condition. Once the crew has been fed, Pearl joins the attack on the restaurant and confronts Sanji, relying on his shields to absorb the cook’s kicks.

After suffering a nosebleed, Pearl panics and becomes Fire Pearl, setting portions of the Baratie ablaze. His indiscriminate behavior threatens the restaurant and his fellow pirates, illustrating how readily the Krieg Pirates sacrifice others in pursuit of victory.

Pearl later attempts to exploit Zeff as leverage against Sanji. His participation ends when Gin, conflicted by the kindness shown to him at the Baratie, smashes Pearl’s armor and removes him from the battle. Much later, Pearl is seen alongside the surviving Krieg Pirates on Hachinosu during the worldwide broadcast from Egghead.

Don Krieg is Pearl’s captain and the source of his authority within the Krieg Pirates. Pearl follows his orders and supports the assault on the Baratie without objecting to the danger imposed on either civilians or crewmates.

Gin is a fellow commander whose strength exceeds Pearl’s defenses. Although they initially fight for the same crew, Gin attacks Pearl after Pearl threatens Sanji and exploits Zeff as a hostage.

Sanji is Pearl’s principal opponent at the Baratie. Pearl’s armor initially resists many of the cook’s attacks, but his confrontation with Sanji exposes both his emotional instability and his willingness to endanger the restaurant around them.
