Personality
Personality
Mule is earnest, dutiful and idealistic. Raised according to aristocratic expectations of knighthood, he wants to protect his country and behave honorably even when the collapsing political order of Midland gives him little guidance.
Meeting Griffith gives that idealism a new focus. Mule is overwhelmed by Griffith's charisma and quickly interprets his arrival as the answer to Midland's suffering.
He is more cautious than Sonia and frequently tries to restrain her reckless enthusiasm. This usually fails, leaving Mule in the role of exasperated guardian despite the fact that Sonia often understands the supernatural situation better than he does.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Mule is a capable young human knight trained in conventional swordsmanship, horsemanship and battlefield combat. He can command soldiers and survive engagements against Kushan forces.
His abilities remain entirely human, placing him in sharp contrast with the Apostle commanders serving the same army. This distinction initially leaves him shocked when Locus reveals the true nature of the War Demons.
Mule's importance within the army therefore comes from his competence and symbolic role among Griffith's human followers rather than supernatural strength.
Story Role
Story Role
Mule first appears leading a remnant of Midland soldiers against the Kushan occupation. His force is in desperate circumstances before Griffith and the reborn Band of the Hawk intervene.
After witnessing Griffith's power and leadership, Mule pledges allegiance to him. Locus later introduces him to the Apostle forces hidden within the army, forcing the young knight to reconcile his heroic image of Griffith with the monsters serving him.
Mule becomes closely associated with Sonia and accompanies her through the army's campaigns. His reactions provide a relatively ordinary human perspective on the increasingly supernatural Band of the Hawk.
After Falconia is created, Mule remains loyal to Griffith and continues serving within his forces, still largely viewing him through the heroic image that first inspired his allegiance.
Relationships
Relationships
Griffith is Mule's commander and idealized hero. Mule joins the reborn Band of the Hawk after witnessing Griffith's intervention against the Kushan forces.
Sonia is Mule's closest recurring companion. She calls him the "Duck Knight" and frequently ignores his attempts to keep her out of danger.
Locus introduces Mule to the War Demons and explains the supernatural structure of Griffith's army.
Isidro develops a competitive rapport with Mule when they meet in Vritannis. Their differing backgrounds—Mule as a formally trained noble knight and Isidro as a streetwise aspiring swordsman—make them natural foils.
