Misao Yamamura

Yamamura is excitable, gullible, superstitious, and prone to jumping to conclusions. Murder scenes can frighten him badly, and he is particularly susceptible to explanations involving ghosts or curses.

He nevertheless possesses genuine enthusiasm for police work and takes enormous pride in his position. His confidence often exceeds his investigative ability, particularly after circumstances allow him to receive credit for cases Conan actually solves.

Yamamura is also friendly and generally well-meaning. His incompetence rarely comes from laziness or malice; he simply lacks the observational discipline demonstrated by the series' stronger detectives.

Yamamura has standard police training and experience handling homicide investigations, robberies, traffic matters, prisoner escorts, and other prefectural police duties.

His deductive ability is weak compared with the series' prominent detectives. He frequently overlooks straightforward clues and forms premature conclusions, requiring Conan to steer him toward the correct solution.

Conan has used Yamamura as a substitute "sleeping detective," tranquilizing him and delivering deductions through him when Kogorou is unavailable. These apparent successes contribute to Yamamura's professional reputation.

Yamamura first appears as an inexperienced Gunma detective during a case involving Yukiko. He is delighted to meet the actress whose police drama inspired his career but proves poorly prepared for a murder investigation.

His repeated encounters with Conan gradually turn him into Gunma's primary recurring police representative. He appears in cases involving the Mouri family, the Detective Boys, and officers from neighboring prefectures.

Yamamura is eventually promoted to inspector, much to Conan and Kogorou's disbelief. His promotion gives him authority over other officers without substantially changing the eccentric investigative habits that define him.

Yukiko Kudo indirectly inspires Yamamura's career through her role as a policewoman in a television drama.

Conan Edogawa repeatedly solves cases assigned to Yamamura and has occasionally used him as the unconscious mouthpiece for his deductions.

Kogorou Mouri frequently works alongside Yamamura and is often frustrated by his investigative mistakes.

Misae Yamamura is Yamamura's paternal grandmother. The two are close, share interests in television entertainment, and spend time together outside his police work.

Ran Mouri is generally more supportive of Yamamura than Conan or Kogorou, including after his promotion.
