Kogorou Mouri

Kogorou is vain, impatient, flirtatious, and extremely proud of his reputation as a great detective. He readily accepts credit for deductions he cannot remember making and rarely questions why his conclusions while "asleep" are substantially better than those he reaches while conscious.

He is also a heavy drinker, gambler, smoker, and devoted fan of idol Yoko Okino. His behavior frequently embarrasses Ran, particularly when he becomes intoxicated or openly flirts with women.

Yet Kogorou's worst habits coexist with genuine courage and strong attachment to his family. Cases involving Ran, his estranged wife Eri Kisaki, or people he personally cares about often reveal a much more focused investigator.

Kogorou was the ace of his university judo club and remains an extremely capable judoka. His preferred throws can rapidly subdue suspects, and his physical skill is far greater than his everyday behavior suggests.

He is also an exceptional marksman. During his police career he demonstrated extremely accurate handgun shooting, a skill that remains important during several dangerous incidents.

His natural detective ability is inconsistent but real. When emotionally invested and free from his usual laziness or assumptions, Kogorou has independently solved complicated cases. Most of his famous successes, however, come from Conan tranquilizing him with the Stun-Gun Wristwatch and presenting deductions through the Voice-Changing Bowtie.

Kogorou begins the series as a struggling private investigator whose agency receives relatively little prestigious work. Conan moves into the Mouri household because living with a detective offers opportunities to uncover information connected to the Black Organization.

Conan soon discovers that he can use Kogorou as a public mouthpiece. By tranquilizing him and reproducing his voice, Conan creates the illusion that Kogorou solves mysteries while sleeping. The resulting "Sleeping Kogoro" phenomenon transforms the previously unsuccessful detective into a celebrity.

His agency consequently becomes a major hub of the series, with clients, police investigations, trips, television appearances, and social invitations repeatedly placing the household at the center of new cases.

Ran Mouri is Kogorou's daughter. Despite their frequent arguments, he is deeply protective of Ran Mouri and becomes immediately serious when her safety is threatened.

Eri Kisaki is Kogorou's wife, although the two live separately. Their constant arguments conceal lingering affection, and neither has formally ended the marriage.

Conan Edogawa lives in Kogorou's home and accompanies him on investigations. Unknown to Kogorou, Conan Edogawa is responsible for most of the deductions that made "Sleeping Kogoro" famous.

Juzo Megure previously worked with Kogorou in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and continues encountering him regularly during murder investigations.

Yoko Okino is Kogorou's favorite idol, and his enthusiastic admiration for her is a recurring part of his personal life.

Shinichi Kudo was already familiar to Kogorou before his disappearance and remains someone Kogorou frequently regards as an irritating rival detective.
