Mimin Otogami

Mimin is free-spirited, stubborn, impulsive, ambitious, and openly resistant to authority. Repeated criticism rarely persuades her to change direction; attempts to restrict her are more likely to strengthen her determination to do exactly what she wants.

Her attitude extends well beyond piano. Mimin can ignore social boundaries, enter places uninvited, touch people without asking, and speak with little concern for whether her behavior appears rude. She does not necessarily intend cruelty, but personal freedom takes priority over conventional expectations.

Mimin can also be competitive and vindictive. When Ako Furusu criticizes her approach to music, Mimin changes her competition plans partly to challenge her directly. At the same time, she is capable of intense admiration, particularly toward musicians whose playing represents the freedom she wants for herself.

Mimin is an exceptionally talented pianist capable of playing compositions according to conventional expectations almost instinctively. Her preference for unconventional interpretation is therefore a deliberate artistic choice rather than an inability to understand proper technique.

Her characteristic fantasy is the Distorted Forest, an expansive musical landscape reflecting her refusal to accept conventional boundaries. The imagery changes alongside Mimin's emotional development, with elements representing people important to her appearing within the experience.

Mimin's performances emphasize freedom over strict fidelity to established interpretation. This approach makes her particularly difficult for musicians who believe technical correctness should determine artistic value, while simultaneously attracting listeners who respond to the individuality of her playing.

Mimin returns to Japan to participate in the Student Music Concours, bringing Lucky into direct competition with another member of his famous family. Her presence also connects the competition to Gakuon's influence over the classical piano establishment.

She becomes fascinated by Furusu and particularly by Meloli Yamanaka, whose earlier performances represented freedom to Mimin. Meloli, however, views their history very differently, creating a conflict over what Mimin's unrestricted approach has meant for the people around her.

Mimin's competition storyline culminates in her rejecting the restrictions surrounding her identity as an Otogami pianist. She decides to retire from the conventional career expected of her rather than continue performing according to a system she considers incompatible with her freedom.

Her reconciliation with Meloli later allows Mimin to reconsider freedom as something that can coexist with meaningful connections to other people rather than simply the absence of restrictions.

Lucky Sonoda is Mimin's younger brother. Their reunion brings Lucky Sonoda into direct contact with another of the siblings he hopes to reconnect with through piano.

Gakuon Otogami is Mimin's father and represents many of the restrictions she rejects. Mimin resists Gakuon Otogami's attempts to control her playing and refuses to subordinate her personal freedom to his standards.

Meloli Yamanaka is a pianist Mimin deeply admires because she associates her music with freedom. Mimin eventually learns that her own influence on Meloli was far more painful than she understood, forcing her to confront the consequences of pursuing freedom without considering another person's perspective.

Ako Furusu attracts Mimin's attention immediately, earning affectionate nicknames based on her pigtails. Their musical disagreement also motivates Mimin to challenge Ako Furusu's understanding of performance.

Don Otogami, Reijirou Otogami, Fanta Otogami, Sorachika Otogami, and Sikato Otogami are Mimin's fellow Otogami siblings and share the unusual musical upbringing created by their father.

Chocho Sonoda is Mimin's mother, from whom she is separated when the family divides during childhood.
