Mikio Nagaoka

Mikio is arrogant, entitled and deeply attached to the social hierarchy of the vanished Tokugawa order. He continues to regard Tsubame as subordinate to him because her family historically served his, despite the abolition of the feudal system.

His resentment of the new era combines with greed. Rather than adapt to changed circumstances, Mikio convinces himself that merchants owe their prosperity to the former samurai class and that taking their wealth is therefore justified.

He is also cruel when challenged. Tsubame's attempt to appeal to the honor of the Nagaoka name only angers him, and he is willing to threaten violence when obedience is not immediately forthcoming.

Mikio practices Kogen Itto-ryu, a sword style inherited by the Nagaoka family. He carries a real katana and possesses enough experience to present a serious danger to a child still learning kenjutsu.

One demonstrated maneuver targets an opponent's legs with a low sweeping cut, attempting to catch the second leg if the first is lifted out of danger. The technique exploits the natural response to a low attack.

Mikio nevertheless lacks the discipline and adaptability of a genuinely accomplished swordsman. Yahiko applies the principles he has learned from the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu and ultimately finds a way through Mikio's offense.

After his family's decline, Mikio leads a group of former samurai descendants who resort to theft. He targets the wealthy Sekihara household connected to the Akabeko and forces Tsubame to obtain an impression of a key while working there.

Tsubame initially obeys because she has been raised to believe that her family remains obligated to the Nagaokas. Yahiko discovers what is happening and tries to protect her, only to be beaten by Mikio's men during his first intervention.

Yahiko later confronts the burglars again. Kenshin and Sanosuke remain nearby but deliberately allow him to handle the central fight himself. Yahiko defeats Mikio using the fundamentals of Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, proving both that he can protect Tsubame and that his training is beginning to produce genuine combat skill.

Tsubame Sanjou comes from a family that served the Nagaoka household under the old feudal order. Mikio exploits her upbringing and attempts to force her into assisting his burglary.

Yahiko Myojin becomes Mikio's opponent after learning how Tsubame is being treated. Yahiko ultimately defeats the older swordsman despite Mikio's real blade and greater experience.

Kenshin Himura watches Yahiko's confrontation and provides guidance without taking the decisive fight away from his young companion.

Sanosuke Sagara accompanies Kenshin and helps ensure that Mikio's remaining followers do not overwhelm Yahiko.
