Kureno Souma

Kureno is gentle, considerate and deeply self-sacrificing. He has become accustomed to placing Akito's emotional needs above his own, to the point that making an independent choice can feel unfamiliar.

His sheltered existence also makes him surprisingly inexperienced in mundane situations. Encounters with Arisa reveal a somewhat awkward, absent-minded side beneath his formal demeanor.

Kureno's kindness is complicated by passivity. He understands that remaining beside Akito contributes to an unhealthy situation, yet guilt and pity make him reluctant to leave.

Kureno is associated with the Rooster of the Zodiac, whose animal manifestation in his case is a sparrow rather than a domestic rooster.

His role around the Souma family head is practical rather than combative. Kureno acts as an assistant, handles errands and spends much of his daily life attending to Akito's needs.

Kureno's Zodiac curse actually broke years before the main story. He can no longer transform and no longer shares the supernatural bond connecting the other Zodiac members, making him the first known member of the current generation to become free.

Kureno initially appears through Arisa's encounter with an unusually sheltered older man. Their brief connection becomes important because Arisa develops strong feelings for him without understanding why he disappears so completely afterward.

His position near Akito later becomes central to the mystery of the curse. Kureno reveals to Tooru that his bond broke spontaneously when he was younger. Akito's devastation convinced him to remain at Akito's side anyway, and the two concealed his freedom from the other Zodiac members.

His decision to stay out of pity ultimately prolongs an unhealthy dependency. Kureno eventually recognizes that genuine change requires him to stop sustaining the isolated world Akito has built around the Zodiac.

Akito Souma dominates Kureno's adult life. Although his supernatural bond with Akito disappeared years earlier, Kureno remains voluntarily out of guilt and pity, allowing Akito to believe he will never leave.

Arisa Uotani meets Kureno outside the estate and quickly becomes emotionally important to him. Their attraction is mutual, but Kureno initially refuses to pursue it because he believes he must remain with Akito.

Tooru Honda searches for Kureno after learning about Arisa's feelings. Kureno eventually entrusts Tooru with the secret that his Zodiac curse has already broken.

Shigure Souma understands more about Kureno's position than most of the family and harbors considerable resentment toward him because of his relationship with Akito.
