Kenji Hagiwara

Hagiwara is relaxed, sociable, perceptive, and much more outwardly charming than Matsuda. He enjoys joking with his friends and is notably popular with women.

Despite his carefree manner, he becomes serious when other people's safety is involved. His ability to read people also makes him effective at smoothing over tense situations among his more confrontational classmates.

Hagiwara is loyal to his friends and generally honest with them. His easygoing demeanor never prevents him from performing dangerous police work professionally.

Hagiwara is a skilled mechanic whose experience begins in his family's automobile repair shop. He understands vehicles and machinery well enough to recognize mechanical problems quickly.

After joining the police, he specializes in explosive ordnance disposal. He is highly competent at bomb defusal and can put on or remove protective equipment faster than most officers.

His police-academy performance is strong enough to earn him a place in the Metropolitan Police Department's bomb squad after graduation.

Hagiwara first enters Detective Conan through the history of the serial bombing case associated with Matsuda and Satou. Wild Police Story later develops him directly as one of five close classmates at the Metropolitan Police Academy.

His decision to pursue police work follows the collapse of his family's automotive business. He and Matsuda eventually choose similar careers and join the explosive-disposal unit together.

During a bomb call seven years before the present storyline, Hagiwara stays with the device after believing its timer has stopped. The bomb unexpectedly restarts and explodes, killing him and other officers. His death becomes the driving force behind Matsuda's determination to catch the bomber.

Jinpei Matsuda is Hagiwara's childhood friend, academy classmate, and bomb-disposal partner. Their shared mechanical interests predate their police careers.

Chihaya Hagiwara is Hagiwara's older sister. She remains deeply attached to her younger brother's memory.

Rei Furuya, Hiromitsu Morofushi, and Wataru Date attend the Metropolitan Police Academy with Hagiwara and Matsuda.

Miwako Satou learns about Hagiwara through the bombing case and Matsuda's history.
