Jinpei Matsuda

Matsuda is blunt, confident, stubborn, and frequently abrasive. He speaks his mind with little concern for how other people will react and initially gives Satou the impression that he is aloof and difficult to work with.

Underneath that attitude, Matsuda is intensely loyal to his friends and takes police work seriously. Personal anger can motivate him, but he remains capable of prioritizing civilians when confronted with genuine danger.

He also has a mischievous streak, particularly around his police-academy friends, and is willing to trade insults or compete physically with them.

Matsuda is an exceptional explosives technician. His mechanical aptitude allows him to dismantle complicated bombs at remarkable speed, and his knowledge extends to repairing machinery and disassembling firearms.

He is also an accomplished boxer, having learned the sport from his father, Jotaro Matsuda. His hand-to-hand ability is demonstrated repeatedly during his police-academy years.

Matsuda is intelligent under pressure and can analyze mechanical systems rapidly, an essential skill during bomb-disposal operations.

Matsuda's background is closely connected to a serial bomber investigated by the Tokyo police. After working in the explosive-disposal unit, he is transferred to Megure's division and partnered with Satou when the bomber resurfaces.

Matsuda's closest friend and bomb-squad partner, Kenji Hagiwara, had been killed by one of the bomber's devices years earlier. Matsuda consequently pursues the case with an intensely personal motivation.

During the Ferris-wheel bombing, Matsuda remains inside a gondola so he can read a final clue revealing the location of another bomb. He transmits the information to Satou moments before the device explodes, sacrificing himself to protect civilians.

Wild Police Story later expands his earlier years and friendships at the Metropolitan Police Academy.

Kenji Hagiwara is Matsuda's childhood friend, police-academy classmate, and bomb-squad partner. Hagiwara's death leaves Matsuda determined to bring the responsible bomber to justice.

Miwako Satou becomes Matsuda's partner after his transfer to the First Investigation Division. The two develop romantic feelings during their brief time together, and Matsuda's death has a lasting emotional effect on Satou.

Rei Furuya is Matsuda's police-academy classmate and initially clashes physically with him before they become close friends.

Hiromitsu Morofushi and Wataru Date complete Matsuda's group of close police-academy classmates.

Chihaya Hagiwara is Kenji's older sister and someone Matsuda has known since childhood.

Jotaro Matsuda is Matsuda's father and the former professional boxer who teaches him boxing.
