Jude

Jude is gentle, devoted and deeply loyal to the Hamburgang family. He regards using his alchemy to restore their daughter as an act of service rather than an experiment intended to advance his reputation.

His blindness has not made him bitter because he believes the toll was exchanged for a successful resurrection. He accepts the loss of his sight as worthwhile if it allowed the family's child to live again.

Jude's contentment makes the truth surrounding the transmutation especially difficult for the other members of the household to reveal.

Jude is an accomplished alchemist capable of human transmutation. Attempting the forbidden technique causes him to encounter the Truth and costs him his eyesight.

He remains capable of alchemy despite being blind. His experience also means that, like other alchemists who have passed through the Gate, he has seen knowledge beyond ordinary alchemical study.

His case initially interests Edward because Jude appears to have accomplished the impossible: exchanging a physical faculty for the successful restoration of a dead human.

Edward and Alphonse seek Jude after hearing that a blind alchemist successfully performed human transmutation. They find him living peacefully with the Hamburgang family and a girl introduced as Rosalie.

The apparent success forces Edward to investigate further because it contradicts everything he believes about human resurrection.

Edward eventually discovers the malformed body produced by Jude's transmutation. The original Rosalie was never resurrected; the family adopted an orphan named Emi and renamed her Rosalie. Because Jude lost his eyesight during the transmutation, he cannot see that the girl is a different person, and the household maintains the deception to let him believe his sacrifice succeeded.

Rosalie is the girl Jude believes he successfully restored through human transmutation. She is actually an adopted child whom the Hamburgang family presents as their resurrected daughter.

Okugata belongs to the family Jude serves and helps preserve his belief that the transmutation succeeded.

Meissner is Jude's close friend and participates in maintaining the deception for his sake.

Edward Elric seeks Jude because his apparent success could overturn Edward's understanding of human transmutation.

Alphonse Elric accompanies Edward and is similarly interested in learning whether Jude genuinely restored a human life.
