Rosalie

Rosalie is quiet, polite and obedient around the Hamburgang household. Her behavior reflects the unusual role she has been asked to maintain for Jude's benefit.

The story provides limited independent characterization because her significance centers on the mystery Edward is investigating. Her willingness to participate in the household's arrangement nevertheless suggests affection and concern for Jude.

Rosalie possesses no alchemical or supernatural abilities. She is an ordinary human child.

Her importance to the story comes entirely from what her existence appears to prove: if she were genuinely the resurrected Hamburgang daughter, Jude would have accomplished what the Elrics believe alchemy cannot do.

Edward and Alphonse meet Rosalie while investigating rumors that Jude successfully resurrected his employer's deceased daughter. Because Jude is blind, Rosalie's presence seems at first to support the family's claim.

Edward discovers a grotesquely malformed body hidden elsewhere on the estate. The household then reveals that the original Rosalie died and that Jude's human transmutation failed. The girl currently called Rosalie is actually an orphan named Emi whom the family adopted after the transmutation and presented to the blind Jude as the resurrected daughter.

The revelation reinforces the same conclusion Edward reached from his own attempt at human transmutation: alchemy has not demonstrated the ability to restore a dead person's life.

Jude believes Rosalie is the daughter he successfully resurrected. The adopted girl helps maintain this belief so that he can live without learning the full truth of his failed transmutation.

Okugata is the mother of the original Rosalie and a member of the household that adopts Emi and gives her the dead girl's name.

Meissner is the family butler and participates in protecting the secret surrounding Rosalie's identity.

Edward Elric initially sees Rosalie as possible evidence that human resurrection can succeed, but his investigation uncovers the truth.

Alphonse Elric accompanies Edward to the Hamburgang estate and shares his interest in Jude's supposed achievement.
