Meissner

Meissner is loyal, compassionate and protective. He regards Jude as a close friend and participates in the Hamburgang family's deception because he believes revealing the truth would cause Jude needless suffering.

His conduct toward the Elrics is restrained rather than antagonistic. He is protecting a secret, but his motivation is preserving another person's happiness rather than concealing a scheme for personal benefit.

Meissner has no established alchemical or supernatural abilities.

He serves as the Hamburgang family's butler and is familiar with the household's history, including Jude's human transmutation and what happened afterward.

Meissner appears when Edward and Alphonse visit the Hamburgang estate to investigate reports that Jude successfully resurrected the family's daughter.

The claim is false. Jude's transmutation produced a malformed body, while the family adopted another girl and renamed her Rosalie. Because Jude lost his eyesight during the transmutation, Meissner and the family allow him to believe the adopted girl is the daughter he restored.

Meissner's participation makes clear that the deception is intended as an act of mercy. The household wants Jude to spend the remainder of his life believing that the sacrifice of his eyesight accomplished what he desperately hoped to achieve.

Jude is Meissner's close friend and the person whose happiness he most actively protects.
