Isma is cheerful, independent and straightforward. Years of living apart from the village have made her self-sufficient rather than withdrawn, and she enthusiastically welcomes the arrival of Guts's group.
She is particularly comfortable around the sea. Fishing is both livelihood and identity, and she takes pride in abilities that rival those of experienced islanders.
Isma's friendship with Isidro develops through their similar energy and curiosity. Their interactions frequently contain teasing, but she also trusts him during dangerous situations.

Isma is half merrow, the daughter of a human fisherman and a merrow woman. After learning her true name, she can transform into a merrow form suited to underwater movement.
Her merrow form allows her to breathe and move naturally underwater. She can also communicate and cooperate with other merrows during the battle against the Sea God.

Isma encounters Guts's party after their ship reaches her island. She explains local stories about the Sea God and the merrows while helping the newcomers understand the village and surrounding waters.
When the Sea God's influence overtakes the island, Isma becomes caught in the battle alongside Guts's group.
Isma meets her merrow mother and learns that she herself is half merrow. By speaking her true name, she awakens her merrow form and joins her mother's people in the conflict.
After the Sea God is defeated, Isma joins Guts's companions on their voyage to Elfhelm. When the island's astral environment later collapses, Isma disappears along with the other beings whose existence depended upon that realm.
