Hyougo Kujiranami

Kujiranami is governed by an old-fashioned conception of warrior honor. He believes that a samurai defeated in a decisive battle should be permitted an honorable death, and he interprets mercy from an enemy not as kindness but as a denial of that right.

Outside that obsession, Kujiranami can behave with surprising courtesy and restraint. His early interactions show a man capable of appreciating ordinary kindness, separating him from comrades motivated primarily by cruelty or enjoyment of violence.

His unresolved resentment toward Kenshin gradually overwhelms that more reasonable side of his personality. After imprisonment, his fixation develops into a state of violent mental instability, and he breaks free to rampage through Tokyo while searching for Kenshin.

Kujiranami possesses extraordinary physical strength, endurance and resilience. His enormous frame allows him to withstand punishment that would incapacitate ordinary fighters, while his arm-mounted weapons give him firepower comparable to military artillery.

His primary weapon is a modified Armstrong cannon fitted to the attachment where his right arm once was. It fires shells powerful enough to destroy substantial sections of buildings and can also be used as a massive blunt weapon at close range.

Enishi later provides him with an advanced grenade launcher. The weapon can fire explosive projectiles more rapidly than the Armstrong cannon and transforms Kujiranami into an extremely destructive mobile artillery platform during his escape through Tokyo.

During the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, Kujiranami fights Kenshin on the shogunate side. Kenshin cuts off his right arm but refuses Kujiranami's request to finish him. Kujiranami interprets the refusal as the theft of an honorable warrior's death and eventually joins Enishi's Jinchū to punish Kenshin.

In the Meiji era he becomes one of Enishi's Six Comrades. During their coordinated assault, his Armstrong cannon gives the group tremendous destructive capacity and makes him one of its most physically dangerous members.

[After being defeated and imprisoned, Kujiranami loses control of himself, breaks out and attacks Tokyo with his grenade launcher. Yahiko Myojin confronts him despite the overwhelming difference in size and firepower. Kenshin Himura is the focus of Kujiranami's resentment. Kenshin amputated his right arm at Toba-Fushimi but refused to kill him, an act of mercy Kujiranami interpreted as an attack on his samurai honor.

Enishi Yukishiro recruits Kujiranami into the Six Comrades and supplies the firearms designed for his missing arm.

Yahiko Myojin confronts Kujiranami during his Tokyo rampage and ultimately succeeds in breaking through his obsession by appealing to his identity and responsibilities as a samurai who survived into the Meiji era.

Sanosuke Sagara clashes with Kujiranami during the Six Comrades' attack and uses his own exceptional strength to counter the giant warrior.

Hajime Saitou helps subdue Kujiranami during the attack on the Kamiya Dojo.
