Hideo Suzuki

Hideo is timid, paranoid and painfully self-conscious. He rehearses conversations in his imagination, worries constantly about how other people judge him and experiences hallucinations that make being alone—especially in darkness—difficult.

At the same time, he possesses a stubborn personal code. His obsession with firearm regulations can seem absurd once civilization collapses, but it reflects his need to maintain rules when the rest of reality no longer makes sense.

Hideo's desire to see himself as a hero repeatedly collides with fear and hesitation. He can act decisively when someone depends on him, yet afterward he often questions whether courage, self-interest or simple panic motivated him.

Hideo is an experienced recreational shooter with legal training in handling his shotgun. Once ammunition becomes available, the weapon gives him a major advantage against both ZQN and hostile survivors.

He is not initially a conventional action hero. His physical conditioning and close-combat ability are limited, and using the shotgun effectively requires him to manage ammunition, distance and the danger of being surrounded.

His survival ability improves substantially through experience. Hideo becomes better at judging ZQN behavior, moving through devastated environments and making decisions under extreme pressure. His later encounters with the infected also suggest that his relationship to the ZQN collective may be stranger than simple immunity or resistance.

Hideo begins as an unsuccessful manga creator working as an assistant while struggling with his career and his relationship with Tetsuko Kurokawa. The first signs of the outbreak initially blend into the paranoia and disturbing images that already fill his daily life.

When the scale of the disaster becomes undeniable, Hideo flees Tokyo carrying his legally owned shotgun. He later encounters Hiromi in Aokigahara and assumes responsibility for keeping her alive.

His journey takes him through the outlet community, encounters with organized survivors and increasingly strange manifestations of the infection. After losing or separating from most of his companions, Hideo eventually returns to a devastated Tokyo and survives largely alone, still struggling with the question implied by his name and the title: whether he ever truly became a hero.

Tetsuko Kurokawa is Hideo's girlfriend before the outbreak. Their relationship is strained by his insecurity, stalled career and jealousy of her former boyfriend.

Hiromi Hayakari becomes Hideo's closest companion after he encounters her near Mount Fuji. Their bond eventually becomes romantic and sexual before Hiromi Hayakari is drawn increasingly deeply into the ZQN collective.

Tsugumi Oda joins Hideo after the outlet-mall collapse and provides medical knowledge that he lacks. Hideo Suzuki and Tsugumi Oda eventually sleep together.

Iura initially sees Hideo's shotgun as an extraordinarily valuable resource when he arrives at the outlet community.

Sango also attempts to incorporate Hideo into the outlet survivors' hierarchy because of the protection his firearm can provide.
