Hiromi Hayakari

Hiromi is quiet, empathetic and more courageous than her subdued appearance initially suggests. Being bullied has left her socially isolated, yet she still approaches a strange adult alone in a forest because she thinks he may be preparing to kill himself.

Her empathy extends into the outbreak. Hiromi does not immediately reduce infected people to monsters and remains interested in the traces of human identity that survive within them. This willingness to see something human where others see only danger becomes increasingly important.

She also develops a strong need for companionship. Hideo provides safety and acceptance at a moment when her old social world has collapsed, while the arrival of Tsugumi Oda gives her another adult companion whose medical experience becomes crucial.

Hiromi begins without combat training or specialized survival skills. Her strengths are emotional resilience, perceptiveness and an unusual ability to remain composed around phenomena that terrify more experienced adults.

After being bitten by an infected infant, Hiromi does not progress like an ordinary ZQN. She enters an anomalous partially infected state, retaining substantial awareness while developing extraordinary physical strength and becoming able to perceive or communicate with the infected in ways ordinary survivors cannot.

Her condition increasingly links her consciousness to the collective existence behind the ZQN. This makes her one of the clearest indications that the outbreak is more complicated than a conventional infection that simply destroys its victims' minds.

Hiromi meets Hideo after the outbreak reaches the area around Mount Fuji. Their initial misunderstanding gives way to companionship, and Hideo takes responsibility for helping her escape as conditions deteriorate.

An infected infant bites Hiromi, but because the infant lacks teeth, her resulting condition differs dramatically from ordinary cases. Hideo refuses to abandon her, and Oda later recognizes that Hiromi's condition could reveal something important about the infection.

Hiromi eventually becomes increasingly connected to the ZQN collective and separates from Hideo. Her consciousness is absorbed into the enormous mass formed by infected bodies, although parts of her individual personality continue to surface within it.

Hideo Suzuki becomes Hiromi's protector and closest companion after they meet in Aokigahara. Their emotional dependence eventually develops into a sexual and romantic relationship, while Hiromi's increasing connection to the infected threatens to separate them permanently.

Tsugumi Oda travels with Hiromi after the outlet-mall escape and uses her nursing knowledge to monitor Hiromi's unusual condition. Hiromi later develops jealousy toward Tsugumi Oda because of her relationship with Hideo.

Shinji is the boyfriend Hiromi mentions having before the outbreak, although she is separated from him when society collapses.
