Hana Asakura

Hana is combative, impatient and far more openly aggressive than Yoh. By adolescence he has become socially isolated, with ordinary school life offering little stimulation for someone raised among powerful shamans and spirits. Fighting local delinquents becomes an outlet for his boredom and accumulated frustration.

Much of his anger centers on his parents' long absences. Hana knows Yoh primarily through reputation and consequently develops an intense desire to surpass him. He dislikes being treated as a child and reacts badly when other people withhold information about circumstances directly affecting him.

Despite his aggression, Hana is not indiscriminately cruel. He restrains himself against ordinary opponents and can show genuine loyalty once he accepts someone. Gardening is one of his quieter interests, learned through his association with Redseb Munzer.

Hana possesses exceptional shamanic potential, with Amidamaru stating that the boy may surpass Yoh both physically and spiritually. He can form Over Souls from a young age and inherits Amidamaru as his principal Guardian Ghost.

Using the Futunomitama no Turugi, Hana creates O.S. Oni Kabuto. Its defensive form resembles a demonic helmet capable of absorbing impacts, while its offensive form manifests around his arm with a large cleaver-like blade.

Hana also contains several oni placed within him by Hao. When his life is endangered, intense negative emotions can trigger Setsubun Mode, causing increasingly powerful oni to emerge. He later learns to control these entities more deliberately and incorporate them into armor-type Over Souls.

Training in Hell strengthens Hana's soul considerably. Later developments expand his spiritual repertoire beyond Amidamaru, including Sakurai Sakutaro and techniques that allow him to summon spiritual copies through the Cloud system.

Hana first appears in the Funbari no Uta epilogue material as a young child traveling with Ryunosuke Umemiya to find the Five Elemental Warriors. He lives at Funbari Onsen under Tamao's supervision while Yoh and Anna are away.

In Shaman King: Flowers, thirteen-year-old Hana lives an uneventful life until Yohane Asakura and Luca Asakura, members of a branch Asakura family, challenge him. Their arrival draws Hana into the conflict surrounding the Flower of Maize.

Hana's past is far stranger than his childhood introduction suggests. He died as an infant alongside his parents in the Middle East and was resurrected through Hao's power; during that resurrection Hao placed oni inside him as protection against forces that might later target the child.

Yoh Asakura is Hana's father. Hana loves him but resents his long absences and becomes obsessed with proving that he can surpass him.

Anna Kyoyama is Hana's mother, from whom he inherits much of his forceful temperament.

Tamao Tamamura raises Hana at Funbari Onsen while his parents are away. Her strict discipline makes her one of the few people Hana genuinely fears provoking.

Amidamaru is Hana's Guardian Ghost and formerly served Yoh. The samurai acts as both combat partner and a connection between Hana and his father.

Alumi Niumbirch is closely connected to Hana and becomes one of the central figures accompanying him through the events surrounding the Flower of Maize.

Yohane Asakura begins as Hana's challenger from the branch Asakura family.

Luca Asakura initially opposes Hana alongside her younger brother.

Hao Asakura is Hana's uncle and the reigning Shaman King. Hao is responsible for resurrecting Hana and placing the protective oni within him.
