Personality
Personality
Haken is primarily characterized through brutality, aggression, and the destructive control he establishes over Iwato. His presence is less ideological than many of the major antagonists surrounding Yamato; what matters to the people fighting him is the immediate devastation caused by his power.
Tokio later contrasts Haken with Sora, regarding Haken as an easier enemy to understand because of that straightforward brutality. There is little ambiguity for the Keepers tasked with confronting someone openly devastating their region.
The manga has revealed comparatively little about Haken's private life or motivations beyond his role as Iwato's dominant hostile Choujin.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
As the Rock Lizard Choujin, Haken can Beastify into an enormous dragon-like creature. The transformation gives him tremendous size and destructive physical power.
His strength is sufficient to make him a regional-level threat rather than an opponent a normal Keeper can handle alone. Iwato Mori's limited personnel are forced into organized operations against Haken and his forces.
Haken also possesses the regenerative properties associated with Choujin, making defeating him considerably more difficult than merely inflicting conventional lethal wounds.
Story Role
Story Role
Haken rises as the principal threat in Iwato while Tokio is living and training there under Ichirou Satou. Tokio joins Iwato Mori's efforts against Haken and gradually becomes one of the central combatants in the regional struggle.
An earlier operation succeeds in eliminating one of Haken's important subordinates, giving the Iwato team reason to believe progress is possible. The later confrontation with Haken himself proves far more dangerous.
The campaign against Haken becomes a massacre. Maureena, Cristiano, and other people Tokio has grown close to are killed, while Iwato is left devastated. Tokio nevertheless plays a central role in defeating Haken and restoring order, earning recognition for his actions in the prefecture.
The experience profoundly changes Tokio. When he returns to Yamato, he is more independent, battle-tested, and willing to take responsibility for other Keepers because he has already experienced the cost of losing comrades against Haken.
