Gunjo

Gunjō is cruel, taunting, and openly entertained by suffering. During battle he tries to frighten or humiliate his opponents rather than simply incapacitating them. His remarks to Rukia reveal a particular enjoyment of hearing an enemy cry out in pain.

He is nevertheless obedient to Shuren and works effectively with the other Togabito. His confidence rests heavily on Hell’s restorative properties and the ability of his tentacles to grow back after being damaged.

Gunjō generates numerous pale tentacles from his torso. They can stretch over considerable distances, bend around obstacles, bind a target, and strike with enough force to break through surrounding structures. Severed tentacles regenerate rapidly, limiting the usefulness of ordinary cutting attacks.

His body shares the unusual persistence of other Togabito. Injuries that would destroy an ordinary Soul do not necessarily end him permanently while Hell continues to restore its condemned inhabitants.

Gunjō also displays strong close-range reflexes and enough physical power to coordinate attacks with Garogai. Ice can temporarily immobilize or damage his appendages, but it does not prevent them from regenerating.

Gunjō participates in the raid on Karakura Town and helps abduct Yuzu Kurosaki and Karin Kurosaki. He later reports Ichigo’s arrival in Hell and assembles with the rest of Shuren’s group to intercept the rescuers.

He primarily confronts Rukia Kuchiki, whose freezing Zanpakutō techniques destroy or immobilize his tentacles. His regeneration allows him to continue fighting after attacks that initially appear decisive.

Shuren later calls Gunjō back for a combined attack on Kokutō. The conspiracy ultimately fails, and the Kushanāda carry Gunjō and his companions into a deeper region of Hell.

Shuren commands Gunjō and uses him in both the Karakura Town abduction and the ambush inside Hell.

Taikon, Garogai, and Murakumo are his fellow condemned warriors.

Rukia Kuchiki is his principal opponent, while Ichigo Kurosaki is the target of Shuren’s plan. Kokutō later turns his weapon against the entire group.
