Kokuto

Kokuto initially appears calm, observant and compassionate. He explains Hell’s dangers, intervenes against other Sinners and recounts the murder of his younger sister, encouraging Ichigo to see him as another brother who understands the pain of losing family.

This persona conceals a patient and calculating manipulator. Kokuto anticipates Ichigo’s reactions, exploits his protectiveness and withholds the true extent of his involvement. He is driven by hatred of Hell and an absolute determination to escape, regardless of the lives endangered in the process.

Kokuto’s account is not wholly fabricated. His sister was murdered, and he killed those responsible. He later admits, however, that he continued torturing and killing people after taking revenge; those subsequent crimes condemned him to Hell.

As a Sinner, Kokuto possesses exceptional strength, speed and resilience. Hell repeatedly restores its prisoners after death, making ordinary destruction temporary. He is powerful enough to pressure Ichigo in Bankai and survive attacks that annihilate lesser Sinners.

Kokuto wields a curved black sword connected to a long chain. He can control the weapon at a distance, use the chain as a whip or restraint, redirect its path and form defensive configurations. The sword also releases concentrated blue spiritual-energy attacks.

His energy shield withstands extremely powerful strikes, including a close-range Cero from Ichigo’s fully transformed Hollow state. The chains attached to Kokuto remain his central weakness: they are Hell’s means of restraining and reclaiming him.

Kokuto appears during an attack on Karakura Town and rescues Karin Kurosaki from Gunjō. After Yuzu Kurosaki is taken into Hell, he offers to guide Ichigo, Rukia Kuchiki, Renji Abarai and Uryū Ishida through its successive levels.

He helps the group fight Shuren and the other Sinners, presenting himself as another captive who opposes them. Kokuto is eventually revealed as the architect of the crisis. He manipulated Shuren’s faction and used Yuzu’s abduction to provoke Ichigo into assuming his full Hollow form, whose power breaks several of Hell’s chains.

After his deception is exposed, Kokuto overwhelms Ichigo’s companions and attempts to escape. Hell itself then lends Ichigo skull-like armor and additional power. Ichigo defeats Kokuto, and new chains drag the Sinner into Hell’s deepest reaches.

Ichigo Kurosaki is Kokuto’s intended means of escape. Kokuto exploits Ichigo’s concern for Yuzu Kurosaki, then becomes his principal opponent.

Kokuto identifies strongly with Ichigo Kurosaki because both had younger sisters they wished to protect, but his own response to loss became a cycle of deliberate cruelty.

Rukia Kuchiki, Renji Abarai and Uryū Ishida initially accept Kokuto as their guide. He later attacks and incapacitates them once they have served his plan.

Karin Kurosaki is rescued by Kokuto as part of his effort to earn the group’s trust. Shuren believes himself Kokuto’s rival, but Kokuto has covertly used him and his followers to set the escape attempt in motion.
