Godot

Godot is irritable, outspoken and practical. He has little patience for romantic ideas about warriors or craftsmen and speaks to Guts with a directness that few people can manage.

Beneath the abrasive exterior, he is compassionate. He adopts Erica, shelters Rickert and Casca, and repeatedly assists Guts despite recognizing how destructive Guts's obsession with revenge has become.

Godot is also introspective about his own life. His devotion to smithing gives him insight into obsession, and he ultimately warns Guts against sacrificing everything important for a single pursuit.

Godot is a master blacksmith rather than a warrior. His most famous creation is the Dragon Slayer, an enormous sword originally commissioned by a local lord who demanded a weapon capable of killing a dragon.

Taking the request literally, Godot forged a blade so massive that no ordinary knight could use it. The lord was furious, but the discarded weapon eventually proves ideally suited to Guts's extraordinary strength.

Godot also repairs and reforges Guts's equipment. His craftsmanship gives the Black Swordsman weapons capable of enduring punishment that would destroy conventional arms.

Godot first becomes connected to Guts before the Eclipse, when the swordsman encounters his secluded forge. After the catastrophe, Guts awakens at Godot's home, where Rickert and Casca have also found shelter.

The Dragon Slayer becomes Guts's primary weapon when he uses it against an Apostle near Godot's home. Godot later repairs the sword and continues offering Guts refuge.

When Guts returns after two years of hunting Apostles, Godot is gravely ill. He rebukes Guts for abandoning Casca and Rickert in pursuit of revenge and urges him to recognize what he may lose. Godot dies shortly afterward.

Erica is Godot's adopted daughter. He raises her and provides the stable home she lacked as an orphan.

Rickert becomes Godot's apprentice and lives at his forge after the Eclipse.

Guts relies on Godot as a blacksmith and receives the Dragon Slayer from his forge. Godot also confronts him about the human cost of his obsession with revenge.

Casca is sheltered at Godot's home after the Eclipse.

Gambino is indirectly connected to Godot through Guts's swordsmanship and earlier life, though the two have no established personal relationship.
