Genkai

Genkai is blunt, disciplined and intolerant of laziness. She trains Yusuke through exhausting physical and spiritual exercises and rarely softens criticism simply to encourage him.

Her harshness is balanced by considerable wisdom and compassion. Genkai understands the dangers of pursuing strength for its own sake and repeatedly tries to prevent younger fighters from sacrificing their humanity for power.

She also has a dry sense of humor and adapts surprisingly well to modern entertainment, including video games. Her relationship with Yusuke often resembles constant bickering, but their mutual loyalty becomes profound.

Genkai is a master of the Spirit Wave, an advanced martial discipline that channels spiritual energy through the entire body. Its techniques can be used offensively, defensively and for healing or purification.

Her Spirit Wave Orb contains a vast accumulation of spiritual power developed over decades. The orb can be transferred to a worthy successor, although absorbing it subjects the recipient to extreme physical and spiritual strain.

Genkai can temporarily restore a younger physical appearance when channeling large amounts of spiritual energy. This is a consequence of her body being revitalized by her power rather than ordinary shape-shifting.

Her techniques include Spirit Gun-like energy projection, Spirit Reflection Blast and methods capable of striking or purifying spiritual entities within a target.

Genkai first holds a tournament to choose a successor, drawing Yusuke into competition against several martial artists and the disguised demon Rando. Yusuke eventually wins and becomes her student.

She later joins Team Urameshi at the Dark Tournament under the identity of the Masked Fighter. Her experience provides the young team with both another combatant and a mentor capable of preparing them for increasingly powerful opponents.

Genkai eventually transfers the Spirit Wave Orb and most of her accumulated power to Yusuke. Shortly afterward, Younger Toguro challenges and kills her before his final match with Yusuke. Following Team Urameshi's tournament victory, Koenma restores Genkai to life as the team's requested prize.

Years later, Genkai trains several demons recruited by Kurama, helping Jin, Touya, Chu, Rinku, Suzuki and Shishiwakamaru reach dramatically higher levels of power.

Yusuke Urameshi is Genkai's principal student and inheritor of the Spirit Wave.

Toguro Otouto was Genkai's close companion and lover in their youth. Their relationship collapses when he chooses to become a demon after winning the Dark Tournament.

Kazuma Kuwabara receives guidance from Genkai and benefits from her understanding of spiritual power.

Koenma has known Genkai for years and works with her during supernatural crises.

Kurama respects Genkai's knowledge and later brings several demon fighters to her for intensive training.

Jin, Touya, Chu, Rinku, Suzuki and Shishiwakamaru train under Genkai before the Demon World Tournament.
