Kazuma Kuwabara

Kuwabara is loud, proud, stubborn, and intensely honorable. He considers fighting acceptable when it follows his personal rules but despises attacking defenseless people or betraying friends. This code is strong enough that he will accept punishment himself rather than break a promise involving his gang.

He is also far more sensitive than his intimidating appearance suggests. Kuwabara loves animals, particularly his kitten Eikichi, becomes openly emotional over his friends, and has none of Hiei or Kurama's reluctance to state exactly how much someone matters to him.

His rivalry with Yuusuke forms the foundation of much of his early behavior. Kuwabara genuinely wants to defeat him but also respects him more than almost anyone. When Yuusuke is absent or threatened, Kuwabara is often the first person to defend his reputation.

Kuwabara possesses unusually strong natural spiritual perception. Even before becoming involved in Spirit World affairs, he can sense ghosts and supernatural presences that remain invisible to ordinary humans.

Under stress, his Spirit Energy manifests as the Spirit Sword, an energy blade projected from his hand. He gradually improves its length, shape, and stability and later becomes capable of summoning multiple swords or manipulating the weapon in more complex ways.

During the Chapter Black Saga, Kuwabara's power evolves into the Dimension Sword, an extraordinarily rare ability capable of cutting through dimensional barriers and territories. This weapon becomes critical because it can sever barriers that ordinary spiritual attacks cannot penetrate.

Kuwabara begins as Yuusuke's school rival and appears even before the supernatural adventure properly begins. Yuusuke's apparent death reveals how much Kuwabara actually respected him, with his grief contradicting the image of their rivalry as simple hostility.

He becomes involved in Yuusuke's supernatural missions through Genkai's tournament and joins him during the assault on Maze Castle. In the Dark Tournament, Kuwabara represents Team Urameshi despite being the group's least experienced supernatural fighter, repeatedly surviving through determination and improvisation.

The Chapter Black Saga makes Kuwabara's Dimension Sword essential to Sensui's plan, because Sensui needs its dimensional-cutting ability to break the barrier separating Human World from higher-class demons. Unlike the other three central fighters, Kuwabara later places greater emphasis on education and human life instead of permanently relocating his ambitions toward Demon World.

Yuusuke Urameshi is Kuwabara's greatest rival and closest male friend. Kuwabara repeatedly challenges him at school and almost always loses, yet their rivalry develops into unwavering loyalty.

Yukina becomes Kuwabara's principal romantic interest after he helps rescue her. He immediately falls deeply in love with her and remains devoted throughout the series.

Hiei constantly insults Kuwabara and is particularly irritated by his affection for Yukina. Kuwabara remains unaware for much of the story that Hiei is Yukina's twin brother.

Kurama is a trusted teammate who often supplies the tactical restraint that Kuwabara lacks. Kuwabara respects his intelligence and fighting ability.

Shizuru Kuwabara is Kazuma's older sister. She is tougher and calmer than he is and possesses spiritual sensitivity of her own.

Eikichi is Kuwabara's beloved pet cat and one of the clearest examples of the tenderness behind his delinquent image.
