Toguro Otouto

Toguro is controlled, stoic and intensely committed to strength. He rarely wastes words or allows emotion to interfere with combat, and even his threats are generally delivered without excitement.

Despite serving criminals and killing without hesitation, he retains a personal warrior's code. He respects courage and strength and dislikes unnecessary interference in fights he considers meaningful.

Beneath that discipline is a deeply self-destructive fixation. Toguro's pursuit of strength is rooted in guilt over his inability to protect his students from Kairen. Becoming a demon allows him to escape aging, but it also becomes part of a decades-long attempt to find someone capable of defeating him.

Toguro's defining ability is complete control over his musculature. He expresses his power in percentages, enlarging and strengthening his body as he releases increasing amounts of demon energy.

Even at relatively low percentages, his physical strength, speed and durability exceed those of most Dark Tournament competitors. At higher levels, his body becomes enormous and heavily distorted by muscle fibers.

He also possesses rapid regeneration and can recover from serious wounds. At full power, the pressure generated by his demonic aura alone can kill weaker demons.

At 100%, Toguro's body requires enormous energy. He can absorb the souls of weaker beings around him to sustain that state.

Toguro first appears as a mercenary working alongside his older brother during the operation involving Yukina. His encounter with Yusuke eventually leads him to identify the young Spirit Detective as someone with the potential to become a worthy opponent.

He coerces Yusuke into entering the Dark Tournament and spends much of the competition waiting for Team Urameshi to reach the finals.

During their final battle, Toguro pushes Yusuke psychologically as well as physically, apparently killing Kuwabara to force Yusuke to release his hidden power. Kuwabara survives, but the shock enables Yusuke to access enough strength to overpower Toguro with his final Spirit Gun. Toguro deliberately meets the attack head-on and dies after exhausting his body.

In Spirit World, Toguro refuses a comparatively merciful judgment and chooses an extraordinarily severe punishment for himself. Before departing, he has a final conversation with Genkai that reveals the regret underlying much of his life.

Yusuke Urameshi becomes the opponent Toguro deliberately cultivates into someone capable of challenging his full strength.

Genkai was Toguro's close companion and romantic partner when both were young martial artists. Their paths separate after Toguro chooses to become a demon, though he continues to care deeply about her.

Elder Toguro is his older brother and fellow former human. Their values differ substantially despite their shared transformation.

Sakyo employs and manages Team Toguro, though Toguro ultimately pursues his own objective through the tournament.

Karasu and Bui are members of Team Toguro who previously challenged the Toguro brothers and subsequently joined them.

Kazuma Kuwabara becomes instrumental in Toguro's attempt to force Yusuke beyond his emotional limits.

Kairen massacred Toguro's students decades earlier, creating the trauma that transformed the course of his life.
