Brook

Before becoming a pirate, Brook led a battle convoy for an unnamed kingdom in the West Blue. He was already an accomplished swordsman and musician, skills that later secured his place aboard the Rumbar Pirates.

The Rumbar Pirates were a music-loving crew captained by Yorki. During their voyage, they encountered the infant island whale Laboon, who became attached to their music and followed their ship toward the Grand Line.

The crew left Laboon with Crocus at Reverse Mountain because the Grand Line was too dangerous for a young whale. Brook and his companions promised to complete their voyage around the world and return from the opposite direction.

Yorki and several crewmates later contracted an incurable disease. The sick members separated from the healthy group and attempted to leave the Grand Line, while Brook became captain of the remaining Rumbar Pirates.

Brook had eaten the Revive-Revive Fruit, which ordinarily grants its user a second life after death. When an enemy crew attacked with poisoned weapons, the surviving Rumbar Pirates realized that none of them would recover.

The crew performed “Binks’ Sake” one final time while recording it in a Tone Dial for Laboon, dying one by one until Brook finished the song alone. Brook’s soul returned from the underworld, but dense fog prevented him from finding his ship for an extended period. By the time he located his body, it had decomposed into a skeleton, with only his afro remaining intact.

Brook continued sailing alone aboard the ruined ship for approximately fifty years. Several years before meeting the Straw Hats, he entered Thriller Bark, where Gecko Moria stole his shadow and placed it in the corpse of the legendary samurai Ryuma. Sunlight would destroy Brook without his shadow, trapping him within the Florian Triangle.

Brook is courteous, cheerful and highly theatrical. He speaks with formal politeness, bows when introducing himself and addresses many people with honorifics. These manners coexist with abrupt requests to see women’s underwear.

He habitually makes “skull jokes” based on organs or bodily functions he no longer possesses. Brook may claim that a sight makes his eyes pop out before noting that he has no eyes, or complain about skin despite having none.

Brook spent decades without another living companion, surrounded by the remains of his crew and unable to fulfill their promise. The revelation that Laboon still waits transforms Brook’s survival from an accident into a responsibility. He no longer wanders merely because death failed to hold him. Reaching the end of the Grand Line becomes the route to delivering both himself and the Tone Dial home.

During the two-year separation, Brook builds an identity independent of tragedy. Soul King is a global celebrity capable of commanding enormous audiences, yet Brook abandons that success as soon as the crew’s appointed reunion arrives.

Whole Cake Island demonstrates the confidence developed through belonging. Brook confronts an Emperor without expecting to win because his task is to obtain information and return to his companions. His composure no longer serves only to hide loneliness; it becomes a practical strength.

Brook’s promise to Laboon remains unresolved, but the conditions for fulfilling it steadily improve. The Straw Hats possess Road Poneglyph copies, an archaeologist who can read them and a ship capable of completing the route the Rumbar Pirates could not.

“Brook” is an English word for a small stream. The series does not provide a specific in-world explanation for his name.

His epithet “Humming Brook” refers to his habit of humming while performing his signature quick-draw technique. The opponent often hears the tune before realizing the sword strike has landed.

“Soul King” combines Brook’s musical genre and celebrity persona with his literal command over his own soul. The title gains additional relevance as he learns to affect soul-based beings.

The Revive-Revive Fruit’s Japanese name, Yomi Yomi no Mi, draws on yomigaeru, meaning “to revive,” and Yomi, a term associated with the land of the dead. Both meanings correspond to Brook’s resurrection and later use of underworld cold.
