Botan

Botan is cheerful, sociable and quick to joke even when dealing with death and supernatural danger. Her upbeat manner initially surprises Yusuke, who expects the Spirit World's guide of the dead to be much more frightening.

She is nevertheless serious about her responsibilities. Botan repeatedly puts herself in dangerous situations to assist Yusuke and protect people connected to him. She also functions well as the group's source of information, explaining unfamiliar supernatural phenomena and relaying instructions from Spirit World.

Although she is capable of sarcasm and can become frustrated by Yusuke's behavior, Botan genuinely cares about him and his companions. She tends to conceal her own worries rather than burden the others with them.

As a Spirit World guide, Botan can perceive spirits and interact freely with supernatural beings. She can travel between the Human and Spirit Worlds as part of her work and uses a large oar as a means of aerial transportation.

Botan possesses spiritual awareness and enough supernatural knowledge to assist Yusuke with cases involving demons, ghosts and Spirit World artifacts. She is not primarily a combatant, however, and generally supports stronger fighters rather than challenging powerful demons directly.

She can produce a spiritual barrier with assistance and occasionally uses defensive techniques or supernatural tools supplied by Spirit World. Her greatest usefulness lies in mobility, information and coordination.

Botan meets Yusuke immediately after his death and explains that his unexpected act of self-sacrifice has complicated Spirit World's plans for him. She guides him through the ordeal that eventually permits him to return to his body.

Once Yusuke becomes Spirit Detective, Botan serves as his assistant and Spirit World's liaison. She accompanies or supports him through early cases and becomes acquainted with Kazuma Kuwabara, Keiko Yukimura, Kurama and Hiei.

During the Dark Tournament and later conflicts, Botan increasingly works with the noncombatants surrounding Team Urameshi. She remains an important member of Yusuke's wider circle even when the scale of his battles moves beyond anything she could fight personally.

Yusuke Urameshi begins as Botan's assigned spirit but develops into one of her closest friends. She guides him through his resurrection and later assists his work as Spirit Detective.

Koenma is Botan's superior in Spirit World and regularly sends instructions to Yusuke through her.

Keiko Yukimura becomes a close friend whom Botan frequently accompanies and protects during Yusuke's supernatural adventures.

Kazuma Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei are Yusuke's companions and consequently become Botan's allies.

Puu is another member of Yusuke's supernatural circle whom Botan helps look after.
