Puu

Puu is gentle, affectionate and intensely loyal to Yusuke. His sweet temperament initially embarrasses Yusuke because the creature is supposed to represent his inner nature.

Unlike Yusuke's deliberately abrasive public personality, Puu openly expresses concern, affection and determination. This reflects the compassion that Yusuke often tries to conceal behind sarcasm and aggression.

Puu is especially persistent when Yusuke is suffering. Even when physically exhausted, he attempts to reach and help his owner.

Puu shares a profound spiritual connection with Yusuke. He can sense Yusuke's location and condition over considerable distances, and changes in Yusuke's spiritual state directly affect him.

Even in his small form, Puu can fly using his elongated ears. He also displays protective spiritual power, including the ability to generate a barrier against dangerous demonic energy.

When Yusuke's dormant demonic heritage awakens, Puu transforms into a huge phoenix-like bird. This mature form has immense durability and enough physical strength to carry several people while flying.

The transformed Puu withstands attacks from Spirit World's Special Defense Force while protecting Yusuke and later carries Yusuke and Koenma through the tunnel toward Demon World.

Yusuke receives the Spirit Beast Egg during his original ordeal to return to life. The egg absorbs energy generated by his actions, with the warning that a corrupted spirit beast could eventually devour him.

Yusuke sacrifices the energy accumulated within the egg to save Keiko Yukimura from a fire. Koenma preserves the egg, and it eventually hatches during the Dark Tournament.

Puu becomes particularly important during Yusuke's ordeal to absorb Genkai's Spirit Wave Orb. Despite sharing Yusuke's suffering, the tiny creature repeatedly tries to bring him water, helping Yusuke endure the trial.

During the conflict with Sensui, Yusuke is killed and subsequently revives through his inherited Mazoku ancestry. Puu responds to the transformation by evolving into his enormous phoenix-like adult form.

Yusuke Urameshi is Puu's owner and spiritual counterpart. Their connection allows Puu to sense Yusuke's physical and emotional condition and locate him across great distances.

Keiko Yukimura frequently looks after Puu and develops an affectionate relationship with him.

Genkai cares for Puu at various points and recognizes the importance of his connection to Yusuke.

Koenma provides Yusuke with the Spirit Beast Egg and preserves it after Yusuke uses its accumulated energy to save Keiko.

Botan regularly interacts with Puu as part of Yusuke's wider Spirit World circle.

Kazuma Kuwabara becomes one of Puu's familiar companions through Team Urameshi.
