Hiei

Hiei is reserved, proud, cynical, and frequently contemptuous of people he considers weak. He dislikes explaining himself and treats overt displays of affection with embarrassment or derision. His early behavior is openly ruthless, fitting his life as a demon thief and fighter who has survived primarily through strength.

Despite his misanthropic comments, Hiei repeatedly demonstrates loyalty through action. He returns to help Yuusuke and the others even when no explicit obligation remains and becomes particularly protective when matters concern people he secretly values. His refusal to verbalize those attachments makes them more visible through the risks he takes on their behalf.

Hiei possesses an intense competitive streak. He respects strength and is much more likely to acknowledge another person after fighting them than after hearing about their reputation. His relationship with Kurama is partly built on this principle: each recognizes that the other is exceptionally dangerous despite their radically different temperaments.

Hiei possesses extreme speed, reflexes, swordsmanship, and Demon Energy. His movements can become so fast that ordinary observers interpret them as teleportation, and he can cut opponents multiple times before they recognize that he has moved.

The Jagan Eye grants enhanced perception and various psychic capabilities, including remote viewing and resistance to mental manipulation. The surgery that implanted it initially reduced Hiei's demonic power, forcing him to rebuild his strength afterward.

His best-known technique is the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, which draws upon the black flames of Demon World and manifests them as a massive dragon-shaped attack. The technique can destroy exceptionally powerful enemies but initially places enormous strain on Hiei's body.

Hiei later learns to absorb the Dragon rather than merely launch it, coating himself in its power and dramatically increasing his physical abilities. He also uses the Sword of the Darkness Flame, shaping demonic fire into a blade when conventional weapons are insufficient.

Hiei first appears as one of three demons who steal dangerous artifacts from Spirit World. Yuusuke confronts and defeats him during his early Spirit Detective work, establishing Hiei as an enemy before circumstances later bring them together against greater threats.

He joins Yuusuke, Kuwabara, and Kurama during the assault on the Four Saint Beasts' Maze Castle and subsequently becomes a member of Team Urameshi in the Dark Tournament. His battles there establish both his ruthless efficiency and the limitations of techniques such as the Dragon of the Darkness Flame.

The Three Kings Saga reveals far more about Hiei's origins as a child of the isolated Ice Maidens and his lifelong search for both a lost Hirui Stone and his twin sister Yukina. He eventually aligns himself with Mukuro, becoming one of the major fighters in her Demon World faction.

Yuusuke Urameshi defeats Hiei during their first meeting and later becomes one of the few people Hiei consistently chooses to fight beside. Hiei rarely describes Yuusuke as a friend, but his actions repeatedly establish the bond.

Kurama is Hiei's closest long-term ally among the central cast. The two knew one another before joining Yuusuke and share an unusually strong mutual understanding based on intelligence, combat ability, and experience in Demon World.

Yukina is Hiei's twin sister. He searches for her for years but refuses to tell her their relationship, partly because he believes she is better off without knowing what he has become.

Kazuma Kuwabara frequently irritates Hiei, especially because of Kuwabara's romantic devotion to Yukina. Their constant insults disguise a battlefield trust built over repeated shared conflicts.

Mukuro becomes Hiei's ruler and later one of the people who understands his history most deeply. Their relationship combines combat, mutual recognition, and the shared experience of having endured brutal pasts.
