Ayame is cheerful, playful and affectionate. She readily turns routine chores at the dojo into games and frequently asks Kenshin to spend time with her and Suzume.
Although young, she is sensitive to changes in the moods of the adults around her. When someone is unhappy or troubled, Ayame often notices and tries to help in the uncomplicated way available to a child.
As Suzume's older sister, Ayame also acts as a small role model. Suzume frequently follows her lead and repeats what she says.

Ayame has no martial-arts training or supernatural abilities. She is an ordinary child and does not participate directly in the series' battles.
She does help with simple chores and cooking around the Kamiya dojo. Her role is primarily domestic, reinforcing the peaceful home life that develops around Kenshin between conflicts.

Ayame appears from the beginning of the 1996 anime alongside Suzume and Gensai. The sisters meet Kenshin after he begins living at the Kamiya dojo and quickly come to regard him as an older-brother figure.
Their appearances frequently accompany the anime's quieter scenes. They help with chores, eat with the group at the Akabeko and join various outings involving the dojo's residents.
During the transition into the Kyoto Arc, Ayame and Suzume are deeply upset when Kenshin leaves Tokyo alone to confront Shishio. Their sadness reinforces the effect his departure has on the family that has formed around the dojo.

Gensai Oguni is Ayame's grandfather and guardian. She frequently accompanies him when he visits the Kamiya dojo.
Suzume Gensai is Ayame's younger sister and nearly constant companion.
