Gensai Oguni

Gensai is compassionate, dependable and accustomed to helping people without making himself the center of attention. His familiarity with the Kamiya household allows him to move naturally among Kenshin's circle, and he responds to their frequent injuries with the practical patience of an experienced doctor.

He also recognizes Megumi's medical ability instead of judging her solely by the circumstances surrounding her association with Kanryuu Takeda. Giving her a place in his clinic allows her to practice legitimate medicine and continue developing as a physician.

The 1996 anime emphasizes his grandfatherly qualities. There he regularly visits the dojo with Ayame and Suzume, participates in the group's quieter everyday moments and provides a stable adult presence around the younger characters.

Gensai has no established combat abilities. His expertise is medicine, and he is sufficiently skilled to diagnose and treat the injuries and illnesses brought to his clinic.

His medical knowledge is particularly useful after the encounter with Beshimi, when Yahiko Myojin is struck by a poisoned dart. Gensai treats Yahiko using instructions Megumi supplied for preparing the antidote, demonstrating both his competence and his willingness to follow another physician's specialist knowledge.

Megumi eventually works at his clinic, where the two provide ordinary medical care to Tokyo residents. Her more specialized medical education complements Gensai's established local practice.

Gensai enters the manga during the Kanryuu storyline as the physician who treats Yahiko after Beshimi's poison attack. His presence gives the protagonists a trustworthy medical resource while Megumi's own history and medical training are being revealed.

After the conflict surrounding Kanryuu is resolved, Megumi begins working with Gensai. This gives her a legitimate setting in which to use the medical skills she originally learned from her family and establishes her continuing place in Tokyo.

The 1996 anime broadens Gensai's role substantially. He appears from the beginning of the adaptation, frequently visits the Kamiya Dojo and is involved in several anime-original stories centered on Megumi's work as a doctor. Ayame and Suzume accompany him in many of these appearances.

Megumi Takani becomes Gensai's colleague and assistant at his clinic. He gives her an environment where her considerable medical training can be used to treat patients legitimately.

Kaoru Kamiya belongs to the family with whom Gensai has a longstanding friendship, making him a trusted presence at the Kamiya Dojo.

Kenshin Himura, Sanosuke Sagara and Yahiko Myojin are among the dojo's residents and allies for whom Gensai provides medical assistance when needed.

Ayame Oguni and Suzume Oguni are Gensai's granddaughters in the 1996 anime continuity. They do not exist in the original manga.
