Akon

Akon is composed, analytical and direct. He rarely allows surprise or personal feeling to interfere with his work, although the actions of Mayuri and Kisuke Urahara can test that composure.

Unlike Mayuri, Akon prioritizes the survival of Soul Society over rigid laboratory authority. During an emergency, he will act without his captain’s permission if waiting would endanger more lives. He also shows genuine warmth toward Nemu Kurotsuchi and respects the work that produced her.

Akon specializes in Reishi Energetics, converting spiritual particles into usable energy and equipment. He is also an accomplished Gigai researcher and quickly recognizes that Rukia’s artificial body was built by someone beyond the institute’s lawful personnel.

His later equipment includes chemical cylinders used for Róng, a corrosive reaction capable of dissolving a creature from Hell. Although Akon carries a Zanpakutō, neither its name nor its release is known.

As a child, Akon is confined in the Nest of Maggots before Urahara recruits Mayuri to help establish the Research and Development Institute. Akon joins the organization and eventually becomes one of its senior officers.

During the Quincy invasion, he directs communications, contacts Urahara and opens a Garganta to bring Ichigo Kurosaki to Soul Society without waiting for Mayuri’s authorization. Akon is badly wounded when the institute is attacked but survives. Years after the war, he succeeds Nemu as the Twelfth Division’s lieutenant.

Mayuri Kurotsuchi is Akon’s captain and scientific superior. Akon understands his methods unusually well but sometimes acts independently when circumstances demand it.

Kisuke Urahara helps establish the institute and later cooperates with Akon during the invasion. Nemu Kurotsuchi is a colleague whom Akon regards as the finest result of Mayuri’s research.

Hiyosu, Rin Tsubokura and Niko Kuna are his fellow researchers. Ichigo Kurosaki is the ally whose return Akon helps arrange.
