Mayuri Kurotsuchi

Mayuri is sadistic, egotistical and intensely curious. He categorizes people as specimens or research assets and willingly exposes subordinates to lethal danger if doing so produces useful information. Cruelty is not incidental to his methods; he often takes pleasure in explaining precisely how thoroughly an opponent has been trapped.

He rejects the concept of perfection because a perfect creation would leave nothing further to improve. This principle drives his constant experimentation and gives him unusual adaptability: defeat, humiliation and physical destruction become data for the next encounter.

Despite his contemptuous behavior, Mayuri is capable of acknowledging scientific accomplishment. He reacts strongly when his creations exceed their intended limits, revealing pride that he rarely expresses through kindness.

Mayuri is a specialist in poisons, drugs, cybernetics, artificial souls and biological modification. He has replaced or altered much of his body, enabling him to extend limbs, install sensors, substitute organs and liquefy himself to escape otherwise fatal injuries. He routinely modifies his equipment after studying an enemy's abilities.

Ashisogi Jizō's Shikai releases a toxin that severs communication between the brain and motor functions while leaving sensation intact. Victims become unable to move but continue feeling pain. Mayuri can adjust the composition of the poison and has engineered safeguards that cause his Zanpakutō to self-destruct if it attacks him.

Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō manifests as a gigantic infant-like creature that spreads lethal poison across a broad area. Mayuri later develops a modified Bankai capable of producing purpose-built organisms from accumulated combat data, tailoring their properties to counter a particular opponent.

Mayuri was once confined in the Maggot's Nest as a potentially dangerous individual. Kisuke Urahara released him and installed him as an officer of the newly created Research and Development Institute, anticipating that Mayuri could succeed him if necessary.

During the Soul Society conflict, Mayuri battles Uryū Ishida and reveals his role in experimenting on captured Quincies, including Uryū's grandfather. Uryū's Letzt Stil overwhelms him, but Mayuri survives by liquefying his body. In Hueco Mundo, he defeats Szayelaporro Granz through layered countermeasures and a drug that radically distorts the victim's perception of time.

The Quincy invasion makes his research indispensable. He counters stolen Bankai, creates artificial light to expose hidden enemies and reverses several forms of zombification. Against Pernida Parnkgjas, Nemu sacrifices herself after exceeding Mayuri's expectations, forcing him to confront both the success of his experiment and the loss of his daughter.

Nemu Kurotsuchi is Mayuri's artificial daughter and longtime lieutenant. He subjects her to severe abuse and treats her as property, yet her independent growth becomes the achievement that most directly challenges his beliefs about creation and perfection.

Kisuke Urahara recruited Mayuri, founded the institute he later inherited and remains his intellectual rival. Mayuri resents comparisons between them while repeatedly relying on systems established by his predecessor.

Uryū Ishida is both an adversary and a representative of the Quincy population Mayuri exploited through lethal experimentation. Their first battle exposes the scientist's atrocities and gives Uryū a deeply personal reason to defeat him.

Akon is Mayuri's senior research officer and eventual lieutenant, responsible for maintaining the institute's operations. Szayelaporro Granz is a rival scientist whom Mayuri defeats by demonstrating superior preparation and control over his experiments.
