Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 1 follows Tanjiro Kamado, a kind-hearted boy who sells charcoal to support his family in the mountains of Taisho-era Japan. After his family is slaughtered by a demon and his sister Nezuko is transformed into one herself, Tanjiro sets out to find a cure and avenge his family, encountering the mysterious swordsman Giyu Tomioka and beginning brutal training to become a demon slayer.
Tanjiro Kamado lives a humble life selling charcoal until he returns home to find his family slaughtered by a demon, with only his sister Nezuko surviving—transformed into a demon herself. Saved from Nezuko's initial bloodlust by the demon slayer Giyu Tomioka, Tanjiro is sent to train under the retired slayer Urokodaki Sakonji in hopes of curing his sister and joining the Demon Slayer Corps.
The volume follows Tanjiro's grueling apprenticeship, including trials set by Urokodaki and encounters with the spirits of former students Sabito and Makomo. It closes as Tanjiro enters the deadly Final Selection trial on Mount Fujikasane, while the true architect of the Kamado family's tragedy, the demon Muzan Kibutsuji, is glimpsed walking unnoticed among humans.
