Makomo

Makomo was an orphan taken in by Sakonji Urokodaki, a former Water Hashira who lived at the foot of Mount Sagiri. Urokodaki raised and trained orphaned children, teaching them swordsmanship, survival skills, Total Concentration Breathing, and the ten established forms of Water Breathing before allowing them to enter Final Selection.

As one of those pupils, Makomo underwent the same dangerous preparation later assigned to Tanjiro. Urokodaki also carved her a protective fox mask, following his custom of giving each student a distinct warding mask before the examination. Hers took the form of a smiling white fox decorated with blue flowers.

Makomo entered Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane, where she encountered the Hand Demon. The demon recognized Urokodaki’s pupils by their masks and deliberately hunted them to avenge its imprisonment. After provoking Makomo until she lost control of her breathing, it killed and devoured her.

Her spirit subsequently returned to Mount Sagiri. Because Makomo could not rest while Urokodaki continued grieving for his lost students, she remained near the mountain and later met Sabito’s spirit. Although the two appear together, they trained under Urokodaki in different periods and did not know one another while alive.

Makomo eventually appears before Tanjiro during the final stage of his training. She does not explain her history directly, instead describing herself and Sabito as members of a larger group of children who love Urokodaki and continually watch over him.

Makomo is gentle, patient, and encouraging. Where Sabito relies on blunt criticism and repeated combat, she explains the mechanics behind Tanjiro’s mistakes. She does not lessen the difficulty of his training, but her teaching style gives him the technical understanding needed to benefit from Sabito’s pressure.

She speaks quietly and often gives indirect answers. When Tanjiro asks where she and Sabito came from, Makomo says that they love Urokodaki and refers to other children watching from nearby. Her dreamlike phrasing preserves the mystery surrounding both pupils until Tanjiro reaches Final Selection.

Makomo pays close attention to small faults in movement. She identifies habits that Tanjiro has developed unconsciously and teaches him to coordinate posture, breathing, and muscle control. Her instruction is practical rather than ceremonial: memorizing a form is insufficient unless the practitioner’s body can reproduce it naturally under pressure.

Her devotion to Urokodaki is one of her clearest emotional traits. She regards him not only as a swordsmanship teacher but as the guardian who gave abandoned children shelter and direction. Even after her own training ends tragically, concern for him prevents her spirit from leaving Mount Sagiri.

Makomo also becomes invested in Tanjiro’s survival. She wants him to complete the training that she and other pupils could not carry beyond Final Selection. Her anxiety during his encounter with the Hand Demon reflects both concern for Tanjiro and fear that Urokodaki will lose yet another child.

Makomo is a small girl with pale skin, large blue-green eyes, and straight black hair that reaches past her shoulders. Shorter strands frame her face, and her fringe falls unevenly across her forehead. Her exact height and age have not been published.

She wears a red floral kimono beneath a dark sleeveless garment. A pale obi secures the outfit around her waist, while white leg coverings and sandals complete the clothing. The flower pattern and soft colors distinguish her visually from Sabito’s plainer training attire.

Her white fox mask has closed, smiling eyes and a calm expression. Two blue flowers decorate one side, while yellow coloring appears inside the ears. Urokodaki carved the mask by hand and placed a protective spell upon it before Makomo entered Final Selection.

Makomo sometimes wears the mask over the side of her head rather than covering her face, leaving her expressions visible while she teaches Tanjiro. The floral decoration complements her kimono and the plant referenced by her name.

As a spirit, Makomo retains the appearance and clothing she had before her death. She shows no visible wounds and can interact with Tanjiro’s training experience, though her presence remains imperceptible to Urokodaki.

Makomo trained in Water Breathing, one of the principal swordsmanship styles used by the Demon Slayer Corps. The discipline synchronizes controlled breathing with footwork, posture, and blade movements modeled on the adaptability and continuous flow of water.

Her most clearly demonstrated strength is technical knowledge. Makomo understands all ten Water Breathing forms taught by Urokodaki and can identify why Tanjiro’s attempts fail. She explains that he has memorized the movements intellectually without fully incorporating them into his muscles and breathing.

Makomo teaches Total Concentration Breathing as a whole-body discipline. She helps Tanjiro regulate oxygen intake, strengthen his lower body, maintain balance, and distribute force more efficiently. These corrections allow him to move beyond simple imitation and perform Water Breathing under actual combat pressure.

Her own fighting ability is not shown extensively in the manga. She successfully completed Urokodaki’s demanding preparatory training and qualified for Final Selection, establishing that she possessed legitimate swordsmanship and survival skills. The Hand Demon nevertheless exploited her emotional state, disrupting the breathing control on which those techniques depended.

Unlike Sabito, Makomo does not engage Tanjiro in prolonged sword duels. Her contribution is complementary: Sabito provides an opponent strong enough to expose weaknesses, while Makomo translates those failures into specific adjustments. Together, their instruction helps Tanjiro make the final advance required to split Urokodaki’s boulder.

Makomo does not perform an individually named Water Breathing technique in the original manga or television storyline. Her canon role centers on teaching the principles shared by Urokodaki’s ten forms rather than displaying a signature attack.

• Total Concentration Breathing — a breathing method that greatly increases physical performance by drawing oxygen throughout the body. Makomo teaches Tanjiro how to integrate it with his muscles and movements instead of treating it as a sequence learned only from memory.

• Water Breathing Instruction — Makomo corrects Tanjiro’s posture, breathing rhythm, balance, and inefficient habits across the Water Breathing forms. This is a teaching process rather than a formally named combat technique.

• Seventh Form: Drop Ripple Thrust, Curve — Makomo uses this thrust as part of her move set in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles. Its assignment to her is specific to the game, since the manga does not show her performing the form in battle.

Sakonji Urokodaki rescued Makomo after she was orphaned, raised her, and trained her in Water Breathing. Makomo speaks of Sakonji Urokodaki with deep affection, identifying herself as one of many children who love him. Her inability to return from Final Selection became part of the accumulated grief that caused Sakonji Urokodaki to stop sending pupils to the examination.

The fox mask made by Sakonji Urokodaki represents his desire to protect her. Ironically, the Hand Demon learns to recognize these masks and uses them to identify his students. Makomo’s spirit remains near Mount Sagiri because she is troubled by Sakonji Urokodaki’s sorrow and by the continuing danger to his pupils.

Sabito is Makomo’s fellow pupil in a spiritual rather than historical sense. They both trained under Sakonji Urokodaki, but Sabito entered Final Selection in a different year, and the two met only after death. Their shared attachment to their teacher and unresolved concern for later students bring their spirits together on Mount Sagiri.

Makomo and Sabito divide Tanjiro’s instruction according to their strengths. Sabito challenges him through direct sword combat, while Makomo explains how to correct the faults those battles expose. She respects Sabito’s strength and helps Tanjiro work toward the level required to strike him.

Tanjiro Kamado becomes Makomo’s successor among Urokodaki’s pupils. She introduces herself after one of Tanjiro Kamado’s early defeats by Sabito and assures him that he can improve. Over the following months, she corrects his movements and teaches him to internalize Water Breathing.

Makomo worries about Tanjiro Kamado when he faces the Hand Demon, fearing that he will share the fate of Urokodaki’s previous students. After Tanjiro Kamado beheads the demon, Makomo and the other children are finally released from the fear and regret that kept them near the mountain.

The Hand Demon is Makomo’s killer and the common enemy linking Urokodaki’s deceased pupils. Captured by Sakonji Urokodaki during the Edo period, the demon spends decades on Mount Fujikasane and deliberately targets his students. It enrages Makomo by describing the children it has eaten, causing her breathing to become uneven before it attacks.

Makomo has no established relationship with Giyu Tomioka. Although both trained under Sakonji Urokodaki and both are associated with Sabito, canon places Makomo and Giyu Tomioka in different training periods. Their connection is through their shared teacher rather than a documented meeting.

Makomo appears during Tanjiro’s extended training on Mount Sagiri. After Urokodaki instructs Tanjiro to split a large boulder, progress stalls despite months of effort. Sabito appears first and exposes the gap between Tanjiro’s memorized lessons and his actual combat ability.

Following one of those defeats, Makomo treats Tanjiro’s injuries and explains the problem more gently. Urokodaki has already taught him everything required, but his body has not absorbed the lessons. Makomo therefore helps him identify wasted motion, poor breathing, unstable balance, and other unconscious habits.

Six months of training under Makomo and Sabito culminate in Tanjiro striking Sabito’s mask. The apparent duel resolves into the splitting of the boulder, proving that Tanjiro has satisfied Urokodaki’s final condition. When Tanjiro mentions both children before leaving for Final Selection, Urokodaki’s surprise begins revealing that they were not living pupils.

At Mount Fujikasane, the Hand Demon identifies Tanjiro’s fox mask and recounts killing Urokodaki’s students. Makomo was physically smaller and less powerful than Sabito, and the demon manipulated her anger until she lost control of her breathing. Tanjiro’s victory avenges her and the other children while ending the demon’s practice of hunting Urokodaki’s pupils.

Makomo’s function in the early narrative is therefore both instructional and cautionary. She helps Tanjiro qualify for the Demon Slayer Corps while showing that proper training does not guarantee survival. Final Selection remains lethal, and emotional discipline can matter as much as technical knowledge.

Makomo’s limited appearances do not present a conventional long-term arc. She enters as a composed and knowledgeable guide, and the later revelation of her past changes the audience’s understanding of her rather than substantially changing her behavior.

At first, her calm presence makes her seem like another pupil still living on Mount Sagiri. Her vague answers and ability to appear without Urokodaki suggest something unusual, but the story delays confirmation. Tanjiro’s departure transforms her earlier statements about “the children” into evidence of a larger history of loss.

The account of Makomo’s Final Selection adds a painful contrast to her teaching. She understands the importance of steady breathing because anger and grief disrupted her own concentration at the decisive moment. Her advice to Tanjiro is therefore grounded in the precise weakness that the Hand Demon exploited against her.

Makomo also moves from failed candidate to successful mentor. She could not return to Urokodaki as a Demon Slayer, but her instruction allows Tanjiro to complete the training, survive Final Selection, and defeat the demon responsible for her death. The outcome gives purpose to the knowledge she retained.

Once Tanjiro kills the Hand Demon, Makomo and the other spirits can finally leave Mount Sagiri in peace. Her development concludes through release rather than advancement: the danger to Urokodaki’s future pupils is ended, and the grief binding his dead children to the mountain begins to resolve.

Makomo’s name is written 真菰, the Japanese word for wild rice, Zizania latifolia. The plant grows in wetlands and has long been used in food, weaving, and traditional practices in East Asia.

The first kanji, 真, can mean “true” or “genuine,” while 菰 refers to wild rice or woven plant material. In this case, the complete compound functions as the established plant name rather than necessarily describing her personality.

Her floral clothing and flower-decorated fox mask reinforce the natural imagery associated with the name. The series does not provide an explicit in-story explanation for why Urokodaki’s pupil was named after the plant.

The game assigns her techniques that she understands in canon but is not shown using during the original story.

Makomo also appears in the game’s alternate Academy costume and in material derived from Kimetsu Academy. In that school-setting spin-off, she is depicted as a student and a member of the wind-instrument club.

Her likeness has been used in licensed figures, acrylic stands, cards, plush toys, and merchandise that frequently pairs her with Sabito or Urokodaki. These products commonly reproduce her floral kimono and distinctive blue-flowered fox mask.

Makomo’s brief early appearance became recognizable through the Mount Sagiri training arc and the fox-mask imagery shared by Urokodaki’s pupils. Her design is frequently paired with Sabito’s in official artwork, merchandise, game rosters, and promotional material.

In the second official Japanese character popularity poll, Makomo received 294 votes. Although she remained outside the leading positions, the result reflects continued recognition after her principal role had concluded near the beginning of the manga.

Her inclusion as a playable character in The Hinokami Chronicles expanded her combat portrayal beyond the source material. Because the manga presents her chiefly as an instructor, the game’s move set supplied the franchise’s clearest visualization of how she might apply Water Breathing in a direct fight.
