Synopsis
Monster is a slow-burning psychological thriller with the nerve to ask whether one life is ever worth more than another. Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a brilliant, principled Japanese surgeon in Germany who defies orders to save a critically wounded boy over a wealthy patient — a choice that costs him his career and, years later, confronts him with a horrifying truth: the child he saved has grown into a charming, remorseless serial killer. Tenma sets out to stop the monster he brought back to life, even as the police hunt Tenma himself. Naoki Urasawa constructs it like the finest crime fiction — a sprawling chase across Europe, a cast of ordinary people pulled into the killer's orbit, and a mystery that keeps deepening into questions of nature, guilt, and the value of a human life. There isn't a superpower in sight; the tension comes entirely from character and dread. Monster is a complete, self-contained manga, and its anime adaptation is famously faithful — either is a definitive way to experience it. Mature, patient, and impossible to put down, it's essential reading for anyone who thinks anime and manga can't do grown-up suspense.
