Anna Liebert

Anna is compassionate, intelligent, independent, and unusually resilient. The quiet life built for her after childhood trauma is not characterized by passivity: she studies seriously, works hard, maintains friendships, and learns practical self-defense rather than depending entirely on others.

She possesses a strong moral aversion to killing even after learning enough about her past to have understandable reasons for revenge. This distinguishes her from several characters who respond to Johan by deciding that death is the only possible solution. Anna repeatedly struggles between wanting to stop him permanently and refusing to become shaped by the same violence that shaped him.

Her suppressed memories produce periods of intense psychological distress. Specific images, places, stories, and phrases can trigger fragments of experiences she cannot initially organize into a coherent history. Her uncertainty is especially painful because some memories appear to belong to Johan while others clearly belong to her.

Despite this trauma, Anna repeatedly shows empathy toward vulnerable people. She takes particular care around children and recognizes how easily fear, neglect, and manipulation can damage them. Her compassion becomes one of the clearest contrasts to Johan's method of discovering a person's emotional weakness and exploiting it.

Anna is a capable practitioner of aikido and related self-defense techniques. She can throw or disable larger attackers by redirecting their force, allowing her to escape situations in which an ordinary university student would be physically overwhelmed.

She is also competent with firearms once her pursuit of Johan becomes more serious. Her accuracy improves through practice, though technical ability does not resolve her moral reluctance to kill. Holding a gun against Johan therefore carries a psychological significance far beyond whether she can physically make the shot.

Anna is academically strong and studies law. Her intelligence is less theatrical than Johan's but evident in her ability to reconstruct events, evaluate testimony, travel independently, and investigate pieces of her own history while under considerable emotional pressure.

Her most important strength is psychological endurance. She survives childhood trauma severe enough to fragment her memory, builds a functional adult identity, and later confronts the memories directly rather than retreating permanently from them.

Anna appears first as the surviving twin connected to the shooting that brings Johan into Eisler Memorial Hospital. After the children's disappearance, the story jumps forward nine years and follows a young Heidelberg student who has grown up without a complete understanding of that night.

Her twentieth birthday becomes a turning point when Johan deliberately re-enters her life. Tenma, meanwhile, has discovered that the boy he saved is connected to a series of murders and begins searching for Johan's twin sister because she may hold information about his past. VIZ's official synopsis for Monster: The Perfect Edition, Vol. 1 identifies Tenma's search for the killer's twin sister as central to uncovering the "Monster."

Anna subsequently begins pursuing Johan herself. Her objective overlaps with Tenma's but is not identical: she wants to confront the person tied to the destruction of her childhood and recover the memories necessary to understand why their lives unfolded as they did.

The investigation takes her from Germany to Prague and into the history of the Three Frogs building, the Red Rose Mansion, and the Czech secret-police experiments surrounding the twins. VIZ's later volume descriptions explicitly connect Anna's memories to Prague and the Red Rose Mansion.

Anna eventually recovers the crucial memory that she—not Johan—was the child taken to the Red Rose Mansion and exposed to the massacre there. Johan had listened to her account afterward and absorbed the experience so completely that the twins' memories became entangled. This revelation changes how she understands both Johan's trauma and her own.

Johan Liebert is Anna's twin brother and the central figure in her recovered childhood memories. Johan Liebert repeatedly claims a unique bond with her, but his protection and manipulation are inseparable. Anna loves the brother she remembers while recognizing that stopping him may require opposing everything he has become.

Kenzou Tenma saved Johan as a child and later becomes one of Anna's closest allies in trying to prevent further killings. Kenzou Tenma's refusal to abandon his belief in the value of life strongly affects Anna's own struggle over whether she can kill Johan.

Mr. Fortner and Mrs. Fortner are Anna's adoptive parents in Heidelberg. They give her a stable and loving home after her earlier trauma, allowing her to develop an ordinary identity separate from the events surrounding Johan.

Lotte Frank becomes Anna's friend during the Munich portion of the story. Lotte Frank initially connects to the investigation through Karl and Schuwald, but she later supports Anna personally as the latter's past becomes more difficult to confront.

Dieter travels with Tenma and forms an easy bond with Anna. Her warmth toward Dieter reflects her particular sensitivity to children whose lives have been distorted by abusive adults.

Julius Reichwein becomes one of the adults who offers Anna psychological and practical support. Julius Reichwein does not treat her merely as a source of information about Johan, instead recognizing the danger of forcing traumatic memories too quickly.

Vera Cerna is Anna and Johan's mother. Anna's recovered memory of their separation—including their mother's agonizing choice when Bonaparta demanded one child—becomes one of the most psychologically damaging questions both twins carry into adulthood.
