Background
Background
Zebra trained under IGO president Ichiryu alongside Toriko, Coco and Sunny. The four became known as the Four Heavenly Kings, each possessing an extraordinarily developed sense. Zebra’s specialty is hearing, supported by a voice powerful enough to function as a physical weapon.
His appetite and aggression led him to hunt 26 species to extinction. Every species involved was dangerous and disruptive to its ecosystem, but the scale of his actions brought him into conflict with the law. The Gourmet Revivers Teppei and Yosaku captured him, and the authorities classified him as a first-class dangerous creature.
Zebra was confined in Honey Prison, where he was subjected to continual execution attempts. The punishments had little practical effect. He ate execution beasts, endured the prison’s conditions and sometimes left his cell to walk through the Forest of Death Seasons before returning. Rather than weakening in captivity, he continued developing his body and sound-based abilities.
His proposed release causes international panic. Twenty-five countries declare states of emergency, and financial markets react to the expected damage: companies associated with construction, food defense and pharmaceuticals rise, while insurers fall sharply. Some conflicts halt because neither side wishes to attract his attention, making him a feared deterrent as well as a perceived disaster.
Ichiryu and Yosaku negotiate his release on the conditions that he capture 500 wanted criminals and discover 100 new ingredients. Toriko seeks his assistance because the Mellow Cola lies inside the Gourmet Pyramid, an environment suited to Zebra’s hearing, power and survival experience.
Personality
Personality
Zebra is confrontational, impatient and quick to threaten anyone he considers arrogant. He reacts strongly to boasting, provocation and behavior that irritates him, often describing the offending person or creature as getting “carried away.” His immense strength means that such irritation can become a major physical danger.
He takes pride in eating and fighting without restraint. Unlike Coco’s careful calculation or Sunny’s concern for presentation, Zebra tends to advance directly through an obstacle. This does not make him unintelligent. His hearing gathers detailed information, and he readily uses mapping, weak-point analysis and precisely directed support techniques when brute force alone would endanger an objective.
Promises carry unusual weight for him. Once Zebra accepts a condition, he fulfills it even when compliance is inconvenient. He completes the requirements of his release rapidly, honors agreements made with Komatsu and follows through on obligations to protect people during public emergencies.
His language is abrasive, but his conduct frequently reveals a protective disposition. During the Four Beast crisis, he sends sound messages across the Human World to direct evacuations. At the Cooking Festival, he prioritizes moving the audience away from the battlefield before engaging the Gourmet Corp.
Zebra respects resolve more readily than politeness. Komatsu earns his attention by standing firm despite obvious fear, while Brunch gains his respect by meeting his intimidation with equal force. People who neither flatter him nor retreat tend to establish the most productive relationships with him.
Appearance
Appearance

Zebra is an exceptionally tall, massively muscular man with swept-back red hair. His broad chest, thick arms and heavy frame make him physically imposing even beside the other Heavenly Kings. He commonly wears a vermilion shirt, grey trousers and brown boots.
A large tear extends from the left side of his mouth across his cheek. Numerous scars also cover his arms, reinforcing the physical consequences of his violent hunting career and prison experience. The manga does not give a definitive account of how the facial injury occurred.
His mouth and throat are central to his visual design. When Zebra attacks, he opens his jaw widely enough to release concentrated masses of sound, and the surrounding air visibly distorts under the pressure. His intimidation takes the form of a demonic apparition associated with voice and death.
After the time skip, he adds a purple fur coat to his usual clothing. The garment enlarges his silhouette further and contrasts with the relatively simple prison and desert clothing used during his introduction.
Despite his size, Zebra can move at extreme speed by propelling himself with sound. His posture shifts according to the technique: wide stances support omnidirectional roars, while punches carry focused vibration through the fist and into the target.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Zebra has the strongest raw physical power among the Four Heavenly Kings during much of the Human World storyline. His punches can destroy enormous beasts, while his voice can devastate wide areas without direct contact. He can combine both forms of force, striking the exterior of a target and damaging its internal tissue through vibration.
His hearing extends to sounds as far as 70 kilometres away. By isolating breathing, pulse and muscular noises, he can follow concealed organisms and detect inconsistencies associated with lying. Background noise that would overwhelm an ordinary listener can instead become a detailed source of spatial and biological information.
Echolocation gives him a second form of perception. Zebra releases ultrasound and interprets the returning waves, constructing a map of terrain, buildings, underground passages or bodies of water from tens of kilometres away. The technique demands concentration; while maintaining an especially large Echo Map, he cannot freely use his other sound attacks.
His voice generates physical sound energy. He can condense it into missiles, cutting blades, armor, walls or guided projectiles. Sound can also propel bodies, keep someone afloat, carry speech across enormous distances and repel creatures through frequencies that produce extreme stress.
Zebra stores approximately 4.5 million kilocalories during the Mellow Cola expedition, about 1,800 times the reserve of an ordinary person. His techniques consume enormous amounts of this energy. Voice Missile costs hundreds of thousands of kilocalories, while Death Sound requires roughly two million.
Overuse damages his throat and can leave him temporarily unable to speak. His energy reserve can also fall low enough to prevent further large-scale attacks. Intense anger provides a short emergency increase in output, but it does not eliminate the physical consequences.
Zebra possesses formidable intuition and mental resistance. Honey Prison’s warden cannot control him through pheromones because he unconsciously rejects their influence. His resistance is attributed to willpower and instinct rather than a special chemical immunity.
His Gourmet Cells manifest through the Voice Demon, a gigantic appetite-based presence associated with his most dangerous sound and close-combat abilities. In the Gourmet World, Zebra learns Enbu and gains access to a demonic left arm called the Grim Reaper’s Fist, allowing his appetite power to enter direct physical attacks.
Named Techniques
Named Techniques
Zebra’s techniques range from broad explosions to finely controlled support effects. Their shared medium is sound, but he can vary frequency, direction, density and duration.
-
Sound Bazooka: Releases a massive roar in every direction, producing a wide-area shock wave.
-
Thunder Noise: Fires sound upward and allows it to reverberate and amplify before it descends like lightning.
-
Voice Missile: Condenses voice into a projectile that explodes on impact. The technique offers more direction and range than an unrestricted roar.
-
Machine Gun Voice: Launches a rapid stream of smaller sound projectiles, suppressing several targets or repeatedly striking one area.
-
Voice Burst: Fires an enormous concentrated mass of sound from his mouth.
-
Voice Meteor Shower: Sends numerous sound projectiles into the air and rains them across the battlefield.
-
Meteor Noise: Creates a particularly large airborne sound mass that breaks apart or descends as a bombardment. Its charging time makes advance preparation necessary.
-
One-Blade Voice Cutter: Shapes sound into a cutting wave capable of slicing durable creatures and structures.
-
Weak Point Voice: Identifies a frequency that a target finds intolerable and attacks it through severe acoustic stress.
-
Echo Map: Uses reflected ultrasound to determine the location, size and shape of objects across a wide area, including underground terrain.
-
Voice Sonar: Adapts echolocation to water, detecting schools of fish and submerged objects.
-
Howl Bullet: Sends a threatening voice over great distance. Zebra combines it with echolocation so the message reaches a specific unseen recipient.
-
Sound Armor: Wraps himself or another person in a protective layer of sound.
-
Sound Wall: Creates a solid barrier of acoustic pressure, blocking attacks or preventing a target from escaping.
-
Voice Life Jacket: Surrounds a person with buoyant sound, allowing the body to remain on the water’s surface.
-
Jet Voice: Uses rearward sound pressure as propulsion, producing high-speed aerial movement.
-
Voice Press: Crushes a target beneath concentrated acoustic pressure.
-
Beat Punch: Loads a punch with vibration. The physical blow strikes the surface while the sound destroys tissue from within.
-
Sound Knuckle: Applies vibration through a formal straight punch rather than Beat Punch’s more forceful swing.
-
Death Sound: Reproduces the “footsteps of death” that Zebra has learned to hear after killing countless creatures. The resulting sound can stop a target’s life functions, but its two-million-kilocalorie cost makes it dangerous to use while severely weakened.
-
Speed-of-Sound Nail Punch: Propels Toriko forward with sound as Toriko prepares a Nail Punch, multiplying the speed and impact of the physical attack.
-
Cork Voice: Forms a plug from compressed sound. Zebra uses it during AIR’s preparation to prevent the ingredient’s internal air from escaping.
-
Voice Eruption: Projects a huge column of sound upward like a volcanic eruption, clearing falling debris over a wide area.
-
Chain Bomb: Places or launches sound energy that produces successive explosions from the initial blast point.
-
Laser Voice: Fires a narrow, concentrated beam of sound at a target.
-
Ultrasonic Voice Cutter: Adds approximately 40,000 ultrasonic vibrations per second to Voice Cutter, producing a much sharper cutting wave.
-
Grim Reaper’s Fist: Transforms Zebra’s left arm through his Gourmet Cell power. The limb serves as the basis for his strongest demonic punch.
-
Death Knuckle: Strikes with the Grim Reaper’s Fist, combining Zebra’s physical strength, appetite energy and destructive vibration.
-
Explosive Echo Voice: Releases an indiscriminate burst of reverberating sound around his body. Its wide coverage can endanger allies as well as enemies.
-
Ultrasonic Voice Cutter: Murasame: Surrounds a target with numerous high-frequency cutting waves that strike from multiple directions.
-
Four Heavenly Kings Ultrasonic Cutter: Synchronizes the cells of all four Heavenly Kings and releases a vast barrage of voice blades.
-
King’s Dinner: A combined appetite technique performed by the Four Heavenly Kings. Zebra contributes his immense energy and voice to a construct that devours the enemy’s matter and power.
Relationships
Relationships
Ichiryu trained Zebra and the other Four Heavenly Kings. Although Zebra resists ordinary authority, he accepts Ichiryu’s requests and permits him to negotiate the conditions of his release. Their relationship is founded less on obedience than on Zebra’s recognition of Ichiryu’s strength, judgment and past care.
Toriko is Zebra’s childhood companion, fellow Heavenly King and closest physical rival. Their conversations often resemble arguments, but each understands how the other fights. Toriko personally enters Honey Prison to recruit him, and Zebra agrees to help obtain Mellow Cola after learning that Ichiryu considered it the world’s finest cola.
Coco is far calmer than Zebra and generally avoids provoking him. Their abilities complement one another: Coco can identify a precise vulnerability while Zebra supplies overwhelming area force. Zebra respects competence even when he has little patience for Coco’s measured style.
Sunny openly finds Zebra’s appearance, scars, manners and eating habits unattractive. Zebra considers Sunny’s vanity irritating, producing frequent verbal clashes. The two nevertheless cooperate without hesitation during collective battles and trust one another with synchronized techniques.
Komatsu initially fears Zebra but earns his interest during the Mellow Cola expedition. Rather than merely following the stronger hunters, Komatsu gives precise instructions for extracting the drink from the Salamander Sphinx. Zebra obeys because the chef’s judgment proves correct and later proposes that they form a combo.
Zebra’s proposal to Komatsu becomes tied to a competition with Toriko. Komatsu states that he will consider partnering with whichever hunter assembles the better Full Course. The exchange motivates Zebra to begin filling a menu he had previously shown little interest in completing.
Brunch develops into Zebra’s most compatible chef partner. Their first interactions are antagonistic, and Brunch dismisses a remote intimidation attempt without difficulty. His speed, pride and electrical cooking methods match Zebra’s aggression, however, and the two gradually communicate through direct challenges rather than deference.
Teppei and Yosaku are responsible for Zebra’s arrest after the extinction of 26 species. Zebra holds no visible fear of either Gourmet Reviver, but their successful capture establishes them among the limited number of people capable of restricting him. Yosaku later participates in negotiating his conditional release.
Love is the warden of Honey Prison and attempts to control Zebra with pheromones. Her influence fails because Zebra’s instinct and will unconsciously neutralize it. Zebra disregards her attraction and treats the prison’s authority as an inconvenience rather than a personal relationship.
Daruma Hermit lends Zebra the Daruma Horse during the Four Beast crisis. Zebra uses the animal as transportation while intercepting the Mount Turtle. The arrangement indicates that even reclusive figures are willing to entrust him with important resources when the Human World is threatened.
Mount Turtle is Zebra’s designated opponent during the Four Beast invasion. The creature survives an attack capable of devastating an area far larger than Japan, yet Zebra destroys it with a single Beat Punch by transmitting vibration through its body.
Zaragira and Gur confront Zebra during the Cooking Festival invasion. After evacuating the spectators, Zebra overwhelms Zaragira and Gur with Beat Punch and Voice Press.
Teppei later encounters Zebra during the same battle under altered circumstances. Teppei restrains Zebra with Binding Trees while being controlled by Joa, preventing him from continuing his assault on the Red Nitro.
Brunch travels with Zebra through the Gourmet World. The pair crosses Stardust Hill during the AIR operation, and Brunch later joins Zebra in Area 5 to capture NEWS. Their repeated assignments establish them as an effective hunter–chef team even though the manga never formalizes their partnership in the same terms as Toriko and Komatsu’s combo.
Joa becomes one of Zebra’s late opponents. Zebra, Coco and Sunny confront Joa together but are defeated outside the manga’s depicted exchange. Chichi later restores and strengthens them with Red Nitro cells before they return to the conflict.
Story Role
Story Role
Zebra is introduced through his absence. Other characters discuss the consequences of releasing him long before he joins the journey, presenting his confinement as a matter of international security. Honey Prison then demonstrates why conventional incarceration is inadequate: its execution beasts and extreme environments serve as food and training.
The Mellow Cola arc integrates him into the central group. His Echo Map exposes the Gourmet Pyramid’s structure, his voice clears monsters and obstacles, and his hearing locates Komatsu after the party becomes separated. The expedition also establishes that Zebra can follow a chef’s technical directions when capture requires more than destruction.
His interest in Komatsu gives him a personal reason to build a Full Course. Mellow Cola becomes his drink, and he rapidly fills several other categories while satisfying the conditions of his release. A character introduced as an indiscriminate eater begins making deliberate choices about which ingredients should represent his life.
During the Four Beast crisis, Zebra destroys the Mount Turtle and then joins the other Heavenly Kings against the main body. He also uses Howl Bullets and long-range communication to move civilians toward safety. When the combined creature withstands individual attacks, Zebra contributes to King’s Dinner.
The Cooking Festival shows both sides of his reputation. His first priority is clearing the audience from the island, after which he releases attacks whose range would have endangered them. He defeats large groups of Ash Beasts, overpowers Red Nitro and eliminates specialized Gourmet Corp. fighters before being restrained.
In the Gourmet World, Zebra partners with Brunch for the AIR expedition. He destroys falling meteors above Stardust Hill, uses Cork Voice during AIR’s preparation and later learns Enbu while pursuing PAIR in Area 7.
Zebra and Brunch subsequently travel to Area 5 and capture NEWS. After consuming Acacia’s Full Course, Zebra selects ANOTHER as the fish dish in his personal menu and joins Coco and Sunny in confronting Joa.
After the final conflict, Zebra attends Toriko and Rin’s wedding. Several years later, he travels into space in search of a main dish, the sole unfilled category in his Full Course.
Character Development
Character Development
Zebra enters the story with a completed public image before readers see his ordinary behavior. Governments treat him as a natural disaster, markets respond to rumors of his release and prison officials describe him as uncontrollable. His first expedition complicates that reputation by showing careful listening, cooperation and respect for demonstrated ability.
Komatsu becomes the clearest catalyst for change. Zebra initially regards cooking as secondary to capture and eating, but the Mellow Cola extraction cannot succeed through force alone. Following the chef’s directions produces an ingredient worthy of his menu and encourages him to assemble a Full Course.
His release conditions impose a constructive use for the same traits that led to imprisonment. Capturing wanted criminals redirects his aggression toward public threats, while finding new ingredients makes exploration more valuable than extermination. He completes both requirements faster than the authorities expect.
The Four Beast and Cooking Festival conflicts show growing responsibility without softening his personality. Zebra remains rude, destructive and eager to fight, but he deliberately places civilians beyond his attack range. Protection is expressed through orders, threats and overwhelming force rather than reassurance.
His relationship with Brunch extends this development. Zebra does not choose a passive chef who will accept every demand; he gravitates toward someone fast and combative enough to challenge him. Cooperation becomes possible because neither needs the other to act submissively.
In the Gourmet World, Zebra’s strength expands into more specialized control. Cork Voice preserves an ingredient instead of destroying an enemy, Enbu requires cellular synchronization and the NEWS mission depends on coordination with Brunch. His eventual journey into space continues the menu-building purpose that began with Komatsu’s challenge.
Etymology
Etymology
“Zebra” is the English name for the striped equids of the genus Equus. The character’s Japanese name is written ゼブラ, the standard katakana rendering of the word.
The animal association is reflected indirectly through contrast and pattern rather than a literal striped costume. Zebra’s appearance combines scars, dark markings and sharply separated colors, while his personality alternates between destructive aggression and dependable protection.
His technique names follow a sound and weapons vocabulary. “Voice Missile,” “Sound Bazooka,” “Machine Gun Voice” and “Voice Cutter” describe acoustic energy through familiar military objects, matching the destructive public image established before his release.

In Other Media
In Other Media
The television anime introduces Zebra near the end of the portion licensed for the original English dub. Kenji Matsuda voices him in Japanese. Because the English release did not continue through his full Honey Prison and Mellow Cola storyline, he did not receive a regular English-series performance equivalent to the other Heavenly Kings’ established dub roles.
The Japanese anime adapts his release, Gourmet Pyramid expedition, Four Beast battle and Cooking Festival participation. It expands his interactions with the prison staff and other Heavenly Kings while preserving the contrast between his destructive reputation and practical concern for civilians.
Zebra appears in the crossover special connecting Toriko, One Piece and Dragon Ball. He competes and fights alongside characters from all three franchises, with his voice attacks serving as large-area support.
He also participates in Toriko the Movie: Secret Recipe of Gourmet God. The film uses him as one of the principal heavy fighters and retains Kenji Matsuda in the Japanese cast.
Zebra becomes playable in Toriko: Gourmet Survival! 2 after being absent from the first game’s launch roster. His game style emphasizes high-damage punches, wide sound waves and attacks capable of controlling several enemies simultaneously.
He returns in Toriko: Gourmet Monsters!, Toriko: Gourmet ga Battle! and Toriko: Ultimate Survival. Game-original techniques include Ground-Crust Peel, Grab Machine Gun Voice, Clap Voice, Crescent Cutter and Rock Crush, generally extending his mixture of brawling and ranged sound.
The comedy spin-off Gourmet Academy Toriko reimagines Zebra in a school setting. His intimidation, appetite and loud voice remain central, but the story and techniques belong to a separate comic continuity.
Reception
Reception
Zebra placed fourth in the first official manga character popularity poll with 1,797 votes. The result put him behind Toriko, Coco and Komatsu despite his much later introduction.
In the anime character election, he rose to third place with 1,108 points. His improved position followed the adaptation of Honey Prison, the Gourmet Pyramid and his participation in the Four Beast storyline.
Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro has named Zebra as his favorite character. That preference is also reflected in the unusually elaborate buildup to his arrival, which treats a single hunter’s release as an event capable of altering international politics, markets and military readiness.
His sound abilities support some of the series’ broadest combat functions. The same power can map a continent-scale environment, deliver private messages, protect a building, move allies or erase groups of enemies, allowing Zebra to operate as both the Four Heavenly Kings’ heaviest attacker and their long-range communications specialist.
