Background
Background
Sunny and his younger sister Rin were orphaned during childhood. IGO president Ichiryu took responsibility for them and raised Sunny alongside Toriko, Coco and Zebra. The four boys trained as Gourmet Hunters and became collectively known as the Four Heavenly Kings, each distinguished by an exceptionally developed sense.
Sunny’s specialty is touch. His natural sense extends through fine feelers growing from the ends of his hair, allowing him to inspect everything within their reach. By the beginning of the story, he has turned this sensitivity into a hunting system that can restrain animals, redirect force, examine ingredients and manipulate objects without placing his hands directly upon them.
He develops an elaborate personal philosophy of beauty and applies it to food as rigorously as he does to appearance. A proper meal must harmonize flavor, ingredients, tableware, scenery, music and company. He assembles a Full Course built around foods associated with beauty and maintains a collection of luxury tableware valued at no less than ten billion yen.
Sunny first becomes directly involved in the central journey during the Regal Mammoth operation. The IGO summons him to help defend the mammoth from the Gourmet Corp. He initially captures a juvenile specimen, then joins Toriko’s party in searching for its parent and the Jewel Meat concealed within its body.
After testing himself against the food-revival specialist Yosaku, Sunny accepts that his current strength is insufficient for the Gourmet World. Yosaku introduces him to Guemon, who teaches him intuition on the Three-Way Road. The training allows Sunny to use his feelers with less conscious strain and lays the foundation for Super Frying Pan and his later high-output techniques.
Personality
Personality
Sunny openly judges food, clothing, behavior and surroundings according to whether he finds them beautiful. He is vain about his own appearance and frequently dismisses things as ugly before considering their practical value. His reactions can be blunt, self-centered or insulting, particularly when confronted with poor presentation or manners.
His concept of beauty is broader than physical attractiveness. Harmony between flavor, setting, utensils and diners matters more to him than any one luxurious component. He can appreciate a wild ingredient or violent contest when its parts form a coherent whole, while an expensive meal prepared without balance may repel him.
Sunny is the most selective eater among the Four Heavenly Kings. He dislikes 2,941 foods, and Toriko calls him the group’s greatest food snob. This selectiveness is not merely fussiness: his heightened touch gives him access to textures, temperatures and physical irregularities that other diners cannot perceive, making imperfect combinations unusually intrusive to him.
Despite his narcissism, Sunny opposes pointless killing and becomes intensely protective when family or companions are threatened. His concern for Rin overrides his normal composure, and he is prepared to endure pain or abandon elegance when her safety is at stake. He similarly accepts difficult battles so that allies can continue toward a shared objective.
Sunny has a habit of shortening words and names in Japanese speech. He abbreviates expressions such as “beautiful” and calls Komatsu by a shortened version of his name. The pattern contributes to his affected manner but also signals familiarity with people whom he initially treats dismissively.
Appearance
Appearance

Sunny is a tall, heavily built man whose graceful presentation disguises his official weight of 200 kilograms. He has a narrow face, long eyelashes and extremely long hair divided into several colors. His clothing commonly leaves much of his upper body exposed while emphasizing symmetry, ornament and the movement of his hair.
The hair’s colors correspond to different sensory receptors. Pink feelers perceive warmth, blue feelers detect cold, green feelers register pressure and the far more numerous white feelers transmit pain. The apparent hairstyle is therefore both a visual display and an external sensory organ.
His feelers are approximately 0.1 micrometres thick, far finer than ordinary hair. Individual strands are nearly invisible at close inspection, but Sunny can gather thousands into ropes, nets, hands, blades or large humanoid shapes. Their collective movement makes his hair appear far heavier and more substantial than it is.
Sunny changes outfits between expeditions but retains an interest in exposed, decorative and coordinated clothing. Even equipment chosen for survival is expected to meet his aesthetic standards. He objects when companions step on structures made from his hair and insists that his Hair Raft be treated as a clean dining surface rather than an ordinary platform.
His Gourmet Cell manifestation appears as a powerful demon associated with insatiable hair. The demonic aspect contrasts with Sunny’s cultivated beauty: its appetite does not arrange or evaluate what it encounters, but consumes matter indiscriminately.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Sunny’s sense of touch operates through microscopic feelers extending from the ends of his hair. Everything within their effective range belongs to an area he calls the Dining Kitchen. Inside that space, he can examine an object’s texture, temperature, pressure, movement and physical condition while manipulating it from multiple directions.
At the Regal Mammoth stage, Sunny controls approximately 200,000 feelers with a range of 25 metres. Each strand can withstand roughly 250 kilograms of tension, giving the combined mass enough strength to lift enormous creatures. Their thinness and flexibility let them enter small gaps, locate nerves and pressure points, or spread force across a wide surface.
Training under Guemon expands the number to approximately 300,000, raises each feeler’s tension capacity to about 300 kilograms and doubles the Dining Kitchen’s range to 50 metres. Because intuition reduces hesitation and unnecessary thought, the improvement is qualitative as well as numerical. Sunny can allow force to flow through a structure instead of opposing it rigidly.
Food Honor later increases his control to one million feelers and extends his effective range to roughly 300 metres. At this stage, his hair becomes extremely difficult to cut within the Human World. He can weave more elaborate formations, manipulate several targets at once and amplify redirected attacks far beyond their original power.
Every strand remains connected to Sunny’s nervous system. Cutting one of the white pain-sensitive feelers causes agony comparable to forcibly extracting a tooth without anesthesia. Attacks that tear through thousands of strands can overwhelm him with pain even when his body has not been struck directly.
His sense of touch also functions as an analytical instrument. Sunny can determine an opponent’s physical condition, identify changes in an ingredient, feel movements through barriers and assess the structure of unfamiliar material. This perception supports both combat and food capture, where damaging the wrong tissue could ruin an ingredient.
Sunny possesses the superhuman strength, stamina and appetite associated with Gourmet Cells even without his hair. He withstands impacts from high-level beasts, survives extreme environments and consumes enormous quantities of food to restore energy. His feelers remain his primary weapon because they multiply his reach and precision rather than replacing his physical ability.
After entering the Gourmet World, Sunny can control approximately five million feelers over a range exceeding 700 metres. He also develops remotely operated hair, aerial movement and greater access to the appetite contained in Satan Hair.
Named Techniques
Named Techniques
Sunny’s techniques treat his hair as kitchen equipment, anatomical instruments, restraints and extensions of his appetite. The number of feelers committed to a formation determines its strength and durability.
-
Dining Kitchen: The complete area reached by Sunny’s feelers. He can sense, restrain and “taste” targets anywhere within this zone.
-
Hair Net: Weaves numerous feelers into a flexible net. It can catch animals, absorb attacks, support weight or form the basis of more complex techniques.
-
Hair Lock: Wraps feelers around a target and immobilizes it. Sunny can distribute pressure precisely enough to restrain a creature without unnecessary injury.
-
Hair Knocking: Uses individual feelers to strike pressure points and perform Knocking, temporarily paralyzing or incapacitating a target.
-
Hair Punch: Bundles his feelers into a large arm or humanoid structure and delivers a physical blow. Its strength increases with the number of strands in the formation.
-
Hair Lead: Catches an incoming attack and changes its course rather than stopping it outright. The technique can guide an ally’s projectile toward a more accurate target.
-
Frying Pan: Receives an attack in a flowing Hair Net and returns it with equivalent force. The name follows Sunny’s habit of modeling combat techniques after cooking utensils.
-
Super Frying Pan: An improved counter developed after his intuition training. Sunny can reflect an attack at several times its original strength, with greater amplification requiring more feelers.
-
Hair Operation: Inserts micrometre-thin feelers into injured tissue to perform emergency surgery. It can close damage or stabilize a patient but does not replace comprehensive medical treatment.
-
Hair Raft: Weaves hair into a buoyant transport platform. Sunny treats the surface as immaculate and forbids passengers from stepping onto it with dirty shoes.
-
Hair Marionette: Sends feelers into a target’s body and manipulates its movements like a puppet.
-
Super Hair Shot: Builds power by bouncing a Hair Punch repeatedly through layers of Super Frying Pan, then releases the accumulated force at the target. The charging process produces exceptional power but requires preparation time.
-
Hair Tornado: Rotates a large mass of hair to generate a whirlwind, clearing gas, insects or other hazards from the surrounding area.
-
Hair Spit: Sharpens and extends many feelers simultaneously, piercing numerous targets across a wide area.
-
Hair Dome: Weaves layered hair around Sunny and his companions as a defensive enclosure. The flexible layers distribute incoming force instead of relying on a single rigid wall.
-
Remote Hair: Detaches or extends controllable feelers over great distances, enabling Sunny to inspect places outside his immediate Dining Kitchen.
-
Hair Pull: Links hundreds of Remote Hair strands ahead of his body and reels himself toward them. Long pulls emphasize speed, while shorter placements improve maneuverability.
-
Hair Wing: Shapes feelers into wings whose movement generates powerful gusts, dispersing toxic gas and other airborne hazards.
-
Satan Hair: Awakens the appetite of individual strands, turning them into demonic tendrils that consume whatever they touch. The technique can erase a target rather than merely cutting or crushing it, but its appetite places severe strain on Sunny and is difficult to control.
-
Satan Vomit: Forces Satan Hair to expel something it previously consumed, reversing the technique’s usual direction.
-
Satan Frying Pan: Uses Satan Hair to perform a vastly strengthened counter capable of redirecting attacks produced by Gourmet Cell demons.
-
King’s Dinner: A combined technique of the Four Heavenly Kings. Sunny contributes his appetite to a vast construct that consumes an enemy’s energy and matter.
-
Four Heavenly Kings Combination: Sunny uses Hair Lead to guide a projectile built from the four Kings’ abilities, improving its direction and momentum before the others add poison and sound-based power.
Relationships
Relationships
Rin is Sunny’s younger sister and his closest biological relative. He frequently criticizes her rough presentation, but the complaints coexist with intense protectiveness. When Rin is gravely injured during the Regal Mammoth operation, Sunny uses Hair Operation to stabilize her despite the emotional strain. He is later unsettled by her pursuit of Toriko, whom he considers too coarse to meet his standards.
Ichiryu raises Sunny and Rin after they are orphaned. He trains Sunny alongside the other Heavenly Kings and directs his power toward responsible Gourmet Hunting. Sunny respects him as a teacher and parental figure even when he complains about assignments or associates the IGO’s work with inelegant environments.
Toriko is Sunny’s fellow Heavenly King, childhood companion and frequent rival. Their tastes conflict constantly: Sunny values visual and sensory harmony, whereas Toriko will enthusiastically eat almost anything. They nevertheless trust one another in combat, combine techniques at Death Falls and argue as equals over Jewel Meat. Sunny’s discomfort increases when Rin and Toriko become engaged, since Toriko will formally become his brother-in-law.
Coco shares Sunny’s precision and controlled fighting style. Both rely on senses that collect fine information at a distance, making them effective tactical partners. Coco is calmer and less judgmental, while Sunny is more openly emotional about beauty and presentation.
Zebra represents nearly everything Sunny finds aesthetically unpleasant: noise, aggression, scars and destructive eating habits. Their exchanges are confrontational, but the hostility does not prevent cooperation. Sunny relies on Zebra during the Four Beast conflict and later combines cellular movement with him and the other Kings.
Komatsu initially fails to meet Sunny’s visual standards, and Sunny shortens his name to “Matsu.” His opinion changes as he observes the chef’s respect for ingredients, careful preparation and willingness to endure dangerous journeys. Sunny eventually expresses interest in forming a Gourmet Hunter–chef combo with Komatsu, despite the latter’s established partnership with Toriko.
Queen is Sunny’s partner animal and a young Mother Snake. Sunny regards her as family and proudly describes her beauty and strength to the other Heavenly Kings. Queen provides transport, protects him in battle and helps capture the Shining Gourami behind Death Falls.
Yosaku assists with the regeneration of Toriko’s arm and gives Sunny a blunt demonstration of the gap between his confidence and actual preparedness. After defeating him decisively, Yosaku promises information about EARTH once Sunny becomes capable of surviving the Gourmet World. He then sends Sunny to train under Guemon.
Guemon teaches Sunny intuition on the Three-Way Road. His relaxed, instinctive approach initially conflicts with Sunny’s tendency to control every detail consciously. The training reduces the mental burden of moving hundreds of thousands of feelers and enables Sunny to develop Super Frying Pan.
Sedoru opposes Sunny through a GT Robot inside the Regal Mammoth. Sunny defeats the machine by turning its attacks aside and overwhelming it with a Hair Punch, showing how sensory analysis can expose the limits of remotely operated equipment.
Tommyrod becomes Sunny’s principal Gourmet Corp. opponent at the Cooking Festival. Both fighters possess external biological weapons capable of attacking independently: Tommyrod releases insects from his body, while Sunny controls microscopic feelers. Their contest ends when Sunny allows Satan Hair to consume Tommyrod, a victory that reveals the destructive appetite beneath his cultivated appearance.
Livebearer accompanies Sunny during the expedition for EARTH. The former adversary’s culinary knowledge complements Sunny’s sensory abilities in Area 4, and information from the local civilization lets them reach the Gourmet Garden without crossing the Cave of Aging directly. They secure EARTH together despite much of the capture occurring outside the manga’s central viewpoint.
Nosh is assigned as Sunny’s chef partner during the AIR mission. Sunny travels with Nosh across the Beehive Plain and later supports the enormous AIR fruit with his hair during its preparation, turning his feelers into structural rigging for a culinary task.
Joa is among Sunny’s final major opponents. Sunny, Coco and Zebra confront Joa together but are defeated outside the main sequence of depicted exchanges. Chichi later strengthens them with Red Nitro cells before they return to the conflict.
Story Role
Story Role
Sunny enters the principal narrative during the Regal Mammoth arc, bringing the third of the Four Heavenly Kings into Toriko’s active circle. His sensory powers provide a contrast to direct strength: the feelers measure, restrain and redirect, turning the area around him into a controlled workspace.
His dispute with Toriko over Jewel Meat connects the capture to the personal Full Courses that motivate the Heavenly Kings. Sunny wins the right to designate it as his main dish through rock-paper-scissors. The comic method of settling the argument reflects their friendship, but the choice is meaningful because Jewel Meat satisfies both his aesthetic standards and his desire for food that improves physical beauty.
The Century Soup period moves Sunny toward the Gourmet World. Meeting Yosaku forces him to acknowledge that technique without sufficient instinct will not carry him through its environments. His subsequent training under Guemon expands his range, lifting power and ability to return force.
Sunny’s role in the Shining Gourami expedition combines transport, defense and capture. With Queen carrying the party, he and Toriko reach Death Falls and join Super Frying Pan with Twin Nail Punch to breach the immense waterfall. The journey also demonstrates his growing respect for Komatsu, whose Food Honor is necessary to approach the ingredient properly.
During the Four Beast invasion, Sunny and Queen intercept the King Octopus Kong at the Human World’s southern edge. Sunny defeats it with Super Hair Shot, then joins the other Kings against the main body. When individual attacks fail, the four combine their appetites in King’s Dinner.
At the Cooking Festival, his opponent is Tommyrod. The fight pushes Sunny beyond the refined manipulation that ordinarily characterizes his methods. His hair is damaged repeatedly, subjecting him to extreme transmitted pain, while Tommyrod’s insects turn the battlefield into a contest of competing swarms. Sunny ultimately releases Satan Hair, which consumes Tommyrod and ends the battle at great physical cost.
In the Gourmet World, Sunny helps obtain AIR, learns Enbu in Area 7 and contributes his synchronized cells to the Monkey Dance required for PAIR. He later travels with Livebearer to Area 4 and secures EARTH, completing the missing dessert in his Full Course.
Sunny joins Coco and Zebra against Joa during the final conflict, attends Toriko and Rin’s wedding afterward and later ventures into space with the other Heavenly Kings. His completed Full Course makes him the first of the four to fill every category.
Character Development
Character Development
Sunny begins as an accomplished hunter whose standards allow little room for unfamiliar forms of value. He evaluates people and ingredients by appearance, harmony and texture, often dismissing them before understanding their function. This behavior makes him perceptive but narrow: he notices details others miss while allowing aesthetic prejudice to dictate his first response.
The Regal Mammoth expedition challenges that narrowness. Rin’s injury forces him to use his famously beautiful hair as an invasive surgical instrument, while Komatsu’s courage and competence contradict his initial visual judgment. Jewel Meat also gives him an ingredient whose beauty comes from anatomy, flavor and shared effort rather than presentation alone.
His defeat by Yosaku reveals the limits of excessive conscious control. Sunny has hundreds of thousands of sensory inputs and attempts to govern each one deliberately. Guemon teaches him that intuition can coordinate those inputs without hesitation, producing a more relaxed and powerful style.
The Shining Gourami capture further changes his treatment of harmony. Instead of imposing his sense of order, Sunny participates in a process that requires quiet attention to the ingredient. His growing respect for Komatsu comes from recognizing that the chef’s apparent plainness conceals an unusually beautiful relationship with food.
The confrontation with Tommyrod exposes an aspect of Sunny that his cultivated image cannot contain. Satan Hair is voracious, grotesque and potentially indiscriminate—the opposite of his selective dining philosophy. Using it requires him to accept that his own Gourmet Cells include an appetite he considers ugly, and that protecting others may demand a technique with no elegance.
Later training gives Sunny greater control without erasing that conflict. He uses hair to support AIR rather than devour it, synchronizes his cells with the other Kings through Enbu and completes his Full Course with EARTH. Beauty becomes less a reason to reject the world and more a discipline for finding balance within unfamiliar environments.
Etymology
Etymology
Sunny’s name is written サニー in katakana and corresponds to the English word “sunny.” The word commonly describes sunlight, brightness or a cheerful disposition, although the manga does not provide a detailed canonical account of why Ichiryu or Sunny’s family chose it.
The name suits his colorful visual design and emphasis on radiant beauty. It also contrasts with the darker, demonic imagery of Satan Hair, whose appetite emerges from beneath his carefully maintained exterior.
His techniques follow a kitchen vocabulary. Frying Pan redirects attacks, the Dining Kitchen defines his sensory territory and several hair formations resemble utensils or food-preparation tools. These names frame combat as an extension of capturing and handling ingredients.

In Other Media
In Other Media
The television anime adapts Sunny’s major Human World appearances, including the Regal Mammoth expedition, Shining Gourami capture, Four Beast battle and Cooking Festival confrontation. Mitsuo Iwata voices him in Japanese, while Aaron Roberts performs the role in the English dub.
The anime expands his participation through original scenes and techniques. Hair Tree, which arranges his hair into a large Christmas-tree shape, originates in the animated series rather than the main manga. The adaptation also gives his interactions with Rin, Queen and the other Heavenly Kings additional comedic material.
Sunny appears in crossover episodes connecting Toriko with One Piece and Dragon Ball. He takes part in ingredient hunts and large group conflicts while retaining his preoccupation with appearance and refined dining.
He also appears in Toriko 3D: Kaimaku! Gourmet Adventure!! and Toriko the Movie: Secret Recipe of Gourmet God. These animated productions use his hair for defense, restraint and coordinated attacks with the other Heavenly Kings.
Sunny is playable across the franchise’s primary handheld games, including Toriko: Gourmet Survival!, Toriko: Gourmet Survival! 2, Toriko: Gourmet Monsters!, Toriko: Gourmet ga Battle! and Toriko: Ultimate Survival. His game mechanics emphasize range, enemy control and counters rather than Toriko’s close-range power.
The games introduce attacks not established in manga continuity, including Hair Chop, Hair Grinder, Hair Mixer, Arc-en-Ciel Slash, Étoile Shoot and Gatling Hair. Several names extend his association with beauty, fashion and French decorative vocabulary. The comedy spin-off Gourmet Academy Toriko relocates him to a school setting and adds further exaggerated hair techniques.
Reception
Reception
Sunny placed sixth in the first official manga character popularity poll with 802 votes. He ranked lowest among the Four Heavenly Kings and also finished behind Terry Cloth, a result that becomes the subject of an in-series joke about his vanity.
He again placed sixth in the anime character election, receiving 900 points. Terry once more ranked above him, repeating the comparison used in the manga’s popularity material.
His battles are distinguished by the conversion of a sensory ability into a complete combat system. Hair Net, Hair Operation, Super Frying Pan and Satan Hair use the same biological structure for defense, medicine, counterattacks and consumption, giving his appearances a consistent technical identity across hunting and combat.
Sunny’s design also provides one of the series’ clearest visual translations of a heightened sense. Toriko’s smell and Coco’s electromagnetic sight are often represented through reactions or explanatory imagery, whereas Sunny’s touch becomes a visible field of multicolored hair surrounding the action.
