Personality
Personality
Yuzaemon is hospitable, mild-mannered and genuinely devoted to his son. His commercial success has given the family financial security, but he privately feels that adapting to the new economy required him to surrender part of the pride he once associated with being a samurai.
Those insecurities shape his hopes for Yutarou. Rather than demanding that his son become a merchant, Yuzaemon wants him to develop strength and self-reliance through swordsmanship.
His good nature also makes him vulnerable to manipulation. He accepts Raijuuta's apparent heroism at face value and provides financial support without initially recognizing the swordsman's ulterior motives.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Yuzaemon was formerly a samurai, but the series does not establish a named fighting style or notable combat technique for him. His success in the Meiji era comes from commerce rather than martial ability.
He possesses significant business skill. By recognizing foreign demand for Japanese swords as collectible art, Yuzaemon turns a symbol of the disappearing samurai class into a profitable international trade.
His wealth allows him to maintain a large estate and financially support Raijuuta's Shinko-ryu. It also gives him the resources to seek advanced medical treatment abroad when his family needs it.
Story Role
Story Role
Yuzaemon welcomes Kenshin and his companions to his estate and explains his relationship with Raijuuta. He believes the swordsman protected his family and consequently supports Raijuuta while allowing Yutarou to train under him.
His background also provides context for Yutarou's resentment. Yutarou interprets his father's decision to sell swords to foreigners as an abandonment of samurai pride, whereas Yuzaemon privately hopes his son can embody the strength he believes he himself surrendered.
Raijuuta's supposed rescue of the Tsukayama family is eventually exposed as a staged attack designed to obtain Yuzaemon's financial backing. After Raijuuta's Tobi Izuna severely damages Yutarou's right arm, Yuzaemon ends his support for him.
Doctors offer little hope for Yutarou's injured nerves, so Yuzaemon decides to take his son to Germany in search of more advanced medical treatment.
Relationships
Relationships
Yutarou Tsukayama is Yuzaemon's son and the central concern of his life. Although Yutarou initially looks down on his father's career as a merchant, Yuzaemon consistently supports the boy's ambition to become a swordsman.
Raijuuta Isurugi receives Yuzaemon's financial backing after apparently protecting the Tsukayamas. Yuzaemon withdraws that support after learning that Raijuuta engineered the original attack and after Yutarou is injured.
Kenshin Himura is welcomed by Yuzaemon and eventually helps expose the truth about Raijuuta.
Yahiko Myojin becomes Yutarou's rival and friend. His forceful encouragement before Yutarou's departure helps restore the injured boy's determination, something Yuzaemon is relieved to see.
Kaoru Kamiya briefly instructs Yutarou in proper swordsmanship after the boy begins spending time at the Kamiya Dojo.
