Yutarou Tsukayama

Yutarou is proud, competitive and sometimes spoiled by his wealthy upbringing. He desperately wants to be regarded as a real swordsman and is sensitive to suggestions that his lack of experience makes that ambition childish.

His rivalry with Yahiko quickly becomes productive. Both boys are stubborn and quick to argue, but each wants to surpass the other, giving Yutarou motivation to train seriously instead of relying entirely on his admiration for Raijuuta.

Yutarou also possesses considerable resilience. His confidence can collapse when his idealized understanding of swordsmanship is shattered, but encouragement from people who take his ambition seriously gives him the determination to continue pursuing it.

Yutarou begins with little practical swordsmanship despite his enthusiasm. Under Kaoru Kamiya, he learns basic handling of the shinai and improves rapidly enough to demonstrate genuine aptitude.

He does not possess Raijuuta's advanced techniques or Kenshin's combat experience. His potential lies instead in his willingness to train and the competitive relationship that develops between him and Yahiko.

After Raijuuta's Tobi Izuna cuts the nerves in Yutarou's right arm, doctors believe he may never properly wield a sword with that hand again. His family subsequently seeks advanced medical treatment in Germany.

Yutarou's father becomes the financial sponsor of Raijuuta after the swordsman appears to rescue the Tsukayama family from attackers. Yutarou idolizes his new instructor and accepts Raijuuta's claims that modern kenjutsu has become weak.

After meeting Kenshin's group, Yutarou clashes repeatedly with Yahiko. His attempt to prove himself leads him to the Kamiya Dojo, where Kaoru corrects his basic technique and begins teaching him. The experience introduces Yutarou to a form of swordsmanship very different from Raijuuta's obsession with lethal strength.

Raijuuta's supposed rescue of the Tsukayama family is revealed to have been staged so that he could gain Yuzaemon's financial backing. During Raijuuta's confrontation with Kenshin, Yutarou is struck by Tobi Izuna and suffers severe nerve damage to his right arm.

The injury devastates Yutarou because doctors tell him that his swordsmanship may be over almost as soon as it began. Yahiko refuses to let him surrender to despair and challenges him to become stronger regardless. Yutarou leaves Japan with his father for treatment in Germany.

Yuzaemon Tsukayama is Yutarou's father. Yutarou initially disdains the commercial path his father took after being a samurai, but Yuzaemon remains deeply concerned for his son's welfare.

Raijuuta Isurugi is Yutarou's first master and the swordsman he initially idolizes. Yutarou's faith collapses after Raijuuta's deception and willingness to endanger him become clear.

Yahiko Myojin is Yutarou's rival and eventually a genuine friend. Their constant competition encourages both boys to improve, and Yahiko's harsh encouragement helps Yutarou recover his determination after his injury.

Kaoru Kamiya briefly becomes Yutarou's instructor and teaches him the fundamentals he had not properly learned under Raijuuta.

Kenshin Himura challenges Yutarou's idealized view of Raijuuta and ultimately confronts the swordsman whose philosophy Yutarou once admired.
